32 Chinese University Bulletin Spring • Summer 2006 Academic Exchange Vice-Chancellor Leads CUHK Delegation to Paris Vice-Chancellor Prof. Lawrence J. Lau led a delegation to Paris from 19 to 24 January 2006 to further the University’s partnerships with French teaching and research institutions. The delegation was received by presidents and other senior leaders of the top Parisian institutions, including University Paris I — Panthéon-Sorbonne, Université Paris IV — Sorbonne, HEC School of Management Paris, École Nationale Supérieure de Mines de Paris, and Sciences Po (Paris). A M e m o r a n d u m o f Understanding for Cooperation between CUHK and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) was signed to promote research cooperation and scientific cooperation between CNRS laboratories and departments at CUHK. The first of such projects was initiated through an agreement for a joint research project on traditional Chinese medicine between CUHK’s Institute of Chinese Medicine and the CNRS laboratory located at the École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Paris. The delegation also visited the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and EduFrance to explore how interactions between French institutions and CUHK could be further intensified. Pro- Vice-Chancellor Prof. Jack Cheng visited INSERM to start discussions that will lead to research collaboration in medicine. During the visit, the Vice-Chancellor also met with alumni, outbound exchange students, and friends of CUHK. The delegation included Prof. Jack Cheng, Prof. Fung Kwok Pui, head of United College, Prof. Ho Pui Yin of the Department of History, and Mr. Thomas Wu, director of academic links. Williams and United Celebrate Fourth Decade of Exchange Prof. Catharine Hill, Provost of Williams College, visited United College from 22 to 27 February to mark the 40th anniversary of the student exchange programme between the two colleges. During her stay, Prof. Hill delivered a talk entitled ‘The College System in University Education’ at the United College Annual Workshop on 24 February. She also met with college and University representatives to discuss ways of enhancing exchange and collaboration between the two institutions.
