AECT’s pilot and training programmes will provide real-world projects to enrich the educational experience of students in the programme. Centre for Clinical Trials and Epidemiological Research Tel.: 2637 4755 Fax.: 2645 3098 E-mail: ccter@cuhk.edu.hk Website: http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/med/ccter The centre was established in 1988 under the Faculty of Medicine to pool resources and expertise to develop biostatistics, clinical trials and epidemiological research in Hong Kong. The centre currently runs four programmes. The Biostatistics Programme offers free consultation services to faculty members and contracted services to non-faculty members; these cover research design, preparation of research protocols and proposals, project implementation, data analyses, and review of research papers for publication. It teaches undergraduate courses and also organizes diploma and master’s degree courses jointly with other departments, and conducts research on biostatistical methods. The Epidemiology Programme develops extensive collaborative research with different departments and institutions on adolescent health, substance abuse, utilization of traditional Chinese medicine, eye diseases, psychiatric diseases, cardiac diseases, gerontology, bone mineral content and osteoporosis, quality of life studies, and health needs studies. Besides monitoring clinical trials of the faculty, the Clinical Trial Programme promotes clinical trials in Hong Kong by serving as a contract research organization for academic and pharmaceutical institutions. This includes training and consultation for clinical trials researchers, as well as data monitoring and data analysis of clinical trials. The Community Research Programme on AIDS is supported by the Hong Kong AIDS Trust Fund to study HIV/AIDS related issues, including programme evaluation, patients’ quality of life, surveillance of trends in attitudes and risk behaviours. The centre has also been involved in supporting other research centres at the University such as the Centre for Pharmacoeconomic Research and the Centre for Atherosclerosis Studies at the Faculty of Medicine, and the Institute of Chinese Medicine.
