The Research Centre for Phenomenology and the Human Sciences was established in March 2002 under the Department of Philosophy. Its mission is to promote research in phenomenology and its relationship to the human sciences, as well as to foster national and international exchange and cooperation in phenomenological research. Since its establishment, the centre has organized two international conferences, respectively on ‘Phenomenology and the Human Pathos’ and ‘Identity and Alterity: Phenomenology and Cultural Traditions’, the latter being the first PEACE (Phenomenology for East-Asian CirclE) Conference. The centre organized three symposia in 2003–05, on phenomenology and Taoist philosophy, phenomenology and Buddhist Philosophy, and the French philosopher Sartre and his contributions to phenomenology. All were attended by scholars from mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. In 2005–06, the centre will organize a symposium for young Chinese scholars on phenomenology and the world, as well as an international conference entitled ‘Philia and Sophia: Ten Years of Phenomenological Movement in Hong Kong’. Besides conference proceedings and research findings of individual members, the centre published the inaugural issue of Journal of Phenomenology and the Human Sciences (in Chinese) in 2004. Aspecial issue on ‘Phenomenology and Taoist Philosophy’ is scheduled to be published in autumn 2005. Established with the generous support of the Shun Hing Education and Charitable Fund, the institute is a lighthouse in the local technology landscape, guiding the migration towards to high value-added technology and an information economy. An institute in the forefront of engineering science, the institute spearheads state-of-the-art engineering research, creates and sustains synergy with world- class researchers, develops with and transfers to industries cutting-edge technologies, and promotes appreciation of engineering in society through educational programmes. Two research centres have been established under the institute: the Multimedia Research Centre and the Biomedical and Bioinformatics Research Centre. More will be formed in the future to support new strategic areas.
