Based at the Department of Anatomical and Cellular Pathology, the laboratory was set up with a grant from the Ho Sin-Hang Education Endowment Fund and the University’s One-time Support Fund. The laboratory accommodates research scientists, fellows and students from diverse disciplines engaged in research on molecular genetics of brain tumours, neurodegenerative diseases in Chinese, and animal models of diffuse and focal brain injuries. Cardiovascular Surgical Research Laboratory Tel.: 2645 0519 Fax.: 2645 1762 E-mail: cyng@surgery.cuhk.edu.hk The Cardiovascular Surgical Research Laboratory was established at the University of Hong Kong in 1995 and transferred to the Department of Surgery of the Chinese University in 2000. It is a leading research unit in the world in two areas: • coronary/pulmonary endothelium — smooth muscle interaction (EDHF-related and NO-related) during heart surgery for myocardial protection and for preservation of the donor heart/lung for transplantation; and • biological characteristics, physiology, and pharmacology of coronary artery bypass conduit grafts. The laboratory is well funded and equipped. Its main funding source is the Research Grants Council. Over the years, over 120 full papers from the laboratory have been published in renowned international journals cited by ‘Medline’ and 200 papers and reports have been cited by ‘SCI’. Its research findings are regularly presented at international conferences on both clinical and basic cardiovascular science. The laboratory currently has five sections: organ clambers for large vessel studies; myograph for micro vessel studies; cellular electrophysiological setting for direct measurement of membrane potential of a single cell (myocyte); a patch-clamp equipment section; and nitric oxide meter and membrane-type electrodes for direct measurement. It provides for research from organ to ion channel levels. The laboratory’s research team comprises faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, research assistants, and postgraduate research students. Graduate students from this unit have been well accepted as postdoctoral fellows in renowned American universities.
