LOVE IN THE TIME OF THE PANDEMIC

by Charlotte Chan Sze Lok

Prisoners were we; longing to be free

Lonely souls seeking warmth and company

in a plagued city. Swiped right on the screen,

Our wand’ring hearts matched

like a symphony. Taught not to trust,

nor to expose too much,

Digital romance meant not to last

Love grew strongest

without physical touch.

Yet, the wrath of my parents grew as fast

First of July, forced to bid you goodbye

You held me in your arms and blew me a kiss

No masks can ever hide our tears

Defy their will and stay, promise with fearful bliss

"I’ll bare my heart and soul before you ask.

One day, we will kiss without any masks."
