胡嘉明於美國哥倫比亞大學人類學系畢業,現為香港中文大學文化與宗教學系副教授。
胡嘉明專注研究當代中國的現代性及其文化政治,以及國家與社會關係。

 

她的首部專著
Reinventing Chinese Tradition: Cultural Politics of Late Socialism (University of Illinois Press),通過分析政府、旅遊資本、知識份子話語、與農民的鄉村建設如何透過重新敘述民間文化而協商角力,探討當代中國民間文化的再現與實踐。

她的第二本專著《廢品生活:垃圾場上的經濟,社群與空間》透過垃圾圍城的社會文化現象進一步分析中國現代性的發展矛盾。她最新的研究聚焦在城市的志願文化,探討盛世中國的公共文化政治與新型的國家公民關係。
