This course aims to help students understand the development and current state of social work in rural China. The course content will include major social problems and social needs in the rural Chinese context, development and current structure of social welfare systems in the rural area, and general social services for family and children, youth, elderly, disabled and women. The course will pay special attention to social work practice with disadvantaged groups in special situations, such as migrant children and left-behind children in the migration context, and victims of natural disasters living in the post-quake communities. Challenges faced by social work in the rural context and directions of future development will also be discussed in the course.
