Note that unlike other professors who want to have a large research group, I prefer a small to medium size research group with around four to five Ph.D students only. This way, I can spend some quality time with my research students to learn/think together, and to explore interesting research problems. You may ask what are the ''requirements'' to be my Ph.D student. Beside having a strong academic background in mathematics, algorithms and programming, the most important criteria is that the student needs to be intellectually curious . In other words, you need to have a ''passion in learning'' . If you think you are qualified, please send me email or come to my office for discussion.
Currently, my group is working one two directions: (1) Theory and applications of online learning (e.g., multi-armed bandit, reinforcement learning,..etc); (2) Quantum algorithms and quantum Internet (which may use online learning algorithms).
For students who have a strong background in mathematics or theory, for example, students who have degrees in Computer Science/Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics and/or Physics, our research group is actively seeking these candidates on the above exciting research projects. The backgrounds we seek, or the knowledge that you will learn in your Ph.D study, are: machine learning, probability, optimization, stochastic processes, statistical analysis game theory, approximation algorithms, online learning, quantum computing,...etc.
If you are interested, please send me an email.
