Introduction

The School of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong has been organizing the annual Communication Visiting Program since 2008. The Program aims to promote academic exchange and links among Chinese-speaking scholars in cultural China and improve the quality of research of the Chinese research community. The Centre for Chinese Media and Comparative Communication Research (The C-Centre) of the School of Journalism and Communication will play host to this program in 2020.

Program Theme 2020

The theme for the 2020 workshop is “Gender and Media”. The visiting scholars participating in the workshop are expected to stay in Hong Kong for 7 days from 13 January 2020 to carry out intensive academic exchange and research.

Since the 1960s, issues of gender have energized social movements across national boundaries, while communication scholars have started to examine the relationship between gender and media. Gender-related communication research, broadly defined, draws from journalism and communication studies, sociology, anthropology, political science, psychology, philosophy, and literature, among other disciplines. Today, the digital media environment is a double-edged sword for the scholarship on gender and media: on the one hand, digital media potentially empower the grassroots to participate in gender equality movements; yet, on the other hand, the Internet and social media also give rise to a new wave of hate speech, cyberbullying, and misogyny, which significantly hinders gender equality movements. In addition, as we observe protests, advocacy campaigns, and legalization movements for gender rights in South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Mainland China, there is an increasing need to analyze and investigate gender and media in the unique contexts of Asia. Tackling issues as such, this workshop invites submissions related to gender and media in local, regional, and comparative contexts, which shall focus on historical and/or contemporary interventions and practices of gender representations, gendered labor, media content about gender, audience participation, social movements and backlashes that are themed on gender and intersectionality studies.
