Mrs. Christina LEE LOOK Ngan-kwan, a noted entrepreneur and philanthropist, and the wife of Harold LEE Hsiao-wo, passed away on 12 February 2022 at the age of 98. The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is deeply saddened by the passing of Mrs. Lee and conveys its sincere condolences to her family.

Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, expressed his great sorrow at the loss of Mrs. Lee, and said, “Mrs. Christina LEE devoted her life to philanthropy and was especially unsparing in her efforts to support local education and medical care. CUHK is beyond grateful for the generous donations from the family of Mr. and Mrs Harold LEE to establish scholarships, expand campus facilities and support research and training activities, bringing numerous benefits to CUHK teachers and students. Last year, they also contributed a generous sum to the expansion of the Art Museum, promoting Chinese arts and culture. We feel profoundly beholden to them for all of this. On behalf of our teachers and students, I would like to sincerely offer our deepest condolences to Mrs. Lee’s family.”

Mrs. Christina LEE and the Lee family have made many contributions to society, devoting themselves to promoting the development of medical care and education over many years. A gift from the Lee family for CUHK to promote Chinese art and culture has a precedent over half a century ago, when the late Mr. Harold LEE, founder and first chairman of Television Broadcasts Limited, and his brother Mr. Jung-sen LEE provided the University with critical financial support to build the Art Museum and the Institute of Chinese Studies. Last year, CUHK received a donation of HK$50 million from the family of Mr. and Mrs. Harold LEE on the occasion of the Art Museum’s Golden Anniversary. The Lee family’s gift enabled the Museum to commission a new building, substantially increasing the gallery space available for exhibitions and educational activities, which is expected to be completed in 2023. The University has also decided to name the new main gallery the Harold and Christina LEE Gallery in perpetuity, in recognition of the generosity of the support from Mr. and Mrs. Harold LEE and their family.
