CUHK appoints college head/master and university officer
The Council of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has approved the appointment of Professor Stephen Heung-sang Wong, Professor in the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education, as Head of United College for an initial period of four years, succeeding Professor Jimmy Chai-mei Yu; and Professor Vincent Chung-tong Mok, Professor in the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, as Master of S.H. Ho College for an initial period of four years; succeeding Professor Wing-shing Wong. The University expresses its gratitude and appreciation to Professor Jimmy Yu and Professor Wing-shing Wong for their past support and sterling contributions.
The University has also approved the appointment of Professor Anthony Man-cho So, Professor in the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management, as Dean of the Graduate School for three years. All appointments will take effect from 1 August 2022.
Professor Stephen Heung-sang Wong Appointed Head of United College
Professor Stephen Wong graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education from The University of Liverpool in 1987. He obtained his MSc in sports science in 1989 and his PhD in exercise physiology in 1996 from Loughborough University as a Commonwealth Scholar. Professor Wong joined CUHK immediately after receiving his PhD and is currently Professor of the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education. He also serves as Associate Head of United College and Director of CUHK’s Hong Kong Institute of Educational Research. A highly committed educator and researcher, Professor Wong was awarded the CUHK Research Excellence Award in 2010, and was further appointed as the Vice-Chancellor’s Outstanding Fellow of the Faculty of Education between 2014 and 2019. Professor Wong is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the Hong Kong Association of Sports Medicine & Sports Science. He has actively served the research and educational communities in Hong Kong and overseas.
Professor Wong’s research focuses on physical activity and sedentary behaviour, and the nutritional and metabolic aspects of exercise. He has published extensively in the leading journals of his field. Professor Wong is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Exercise Science & Fitness and an editorial board member of numerous international journals. He has considerable experience in the education sector, serving as a supervisor and member of management committees of colleges and international schools.
Professor Stephen Wong said, “My primary goal is to provide non-formal education of the highest standard to our College’s students. Enriching the learning and life experiences of the students will continue to be a top priority under my leadership, particularly for disadvantaged and vulnerable groups during the COVID-19 crisis.”
Professor Vincent Chung-tong Mok Appointed Master of S.H. Ho College
Professor Vincent Mok completed his bachelor degree in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Sydney in 1992. He was accredited as a Specialist in Neurology in 2000 and obtained his medical doctorate at CUHK in 2006. He joined the Faculty of Medicine as Associate Professor since 2006. He was endowed as Mok Hing Yiu Professor of Medicine in 2017 and is currently the Director of Therese Pei Fong Chow Research Centre for Prevention of Dementia and Director of Margaret K.L. Cheung Research Centre for Management of Parkinsonism. He had also served as the Assistant Dean (Student Affairs, Admissions; 2014-2022) and Head of Division of Neurology, Department of Medicine and Therapeutics (Academic Affairs; 2016-2022).
Professor Mok is a passionate educator. He received Teacher of the Year award seven times from 2006-2012) and the Master Teacher award in 2012, while his academic achievements also brought him the Outstanding Fellow title in 2016.
Professor Mok’s research focuses on dementia and Parkinson’s disease. He has chaired and been a council member of numerous international academic conferences and societies. In recognition of his impactful research, he received the Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Award (Science & Technology) in Natural Sciences (1st Class) from the Ministry of Education, People’s Republic of China in 2011 for his research in cerebrovascular disease. He also received the Excellent Research Award and the 10th Health and Medical Research Fund Anniversary Award from the Food and Health Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2017 and 2021, respectively for his research in dementia.
Professor Vincent Mok said, “I am delighted and honoured to be appointed the Master of a college that students take pride in calling home. I will strive to cultivate students of different backgrounds into talented people and future leaders by honing virtue and responsibility, continuing the college’s mission of encouraging fruitful whole-person development.”
Professor Anthony Man-cho So Appointed Dean of the Graduate School
Professor Anthony So received his BSE degree in computer science from Princeton University, with minors in applied and computational mathematics, engineering and management systems, and German language and culture. He then received his MSc and PhD in computer science with a PhD minor in mathematics from Stanford University. He joined CUHK in 2007 and is currently the Deputy Master of Morningside College, Associate Dean (Student Affairs) of the Faculty of Engineering, and Professor in the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management.
He is passionate about teaching, which has brought him a range of recognition, including the University Education Award and the Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award.
His research focuses on optimisation theory and its applications in various areas of science and engineering. He is appointed as an Outstanding Fellow of the Faculty of Engineering at CUHK in 2019. He has received a number of research awards, including the 2018 IEEE Signal Processing Society Best Paper Award, the 2016-17 CUHK Research Excellence Award, the 2015 IEEE Signal Processing Society Signal Processing Magazine Best Paper Award, and the 2010 INFORMS Optimisation Society Optimisation Prize for Young Researchers.
