Today (5 September) is the first day of The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s (CUHK) 2022/23 academic year. The University held a flag-raising ceremony at its new flagpoles this morning, marking the beginning of the new semester.

CUHK is honoured to have welcomed Secretary for Security Mr Tang Ping-keung, Secretary for Education Dr Choi Yuk-lin, Commissioner of Police Mr Raymond Siu Chak-yee, Deputy Commissioner of Police Mr Joe Chow Yat-ming, Professor Xu Kai, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Educational, Scientific and Technological Affairs, the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR, Mr Deng Jianwei, Bureau Chief, Office for Safeguarding National Security of the Central People’s Government of the People’s Republic of China in the HKSAR and Mr Wang Qi, Director-General of the Department of International Organisations and Conferences, Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the HKSAR to the occasion, together with 200 guests including Council members, staff, students, alumni and friends of the University. CUHK Council Chairman Professor John Chai Yat-Chiu, and Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rocky S. Tuan presided at the ceremony.

The event was followed by the Inauguration Ceremony for commencing undergraduate students held at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. Professor Tuan addressed students about to embark on a new journey in life. He said, “I know that the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has meant that for you to get here today, you have required, and in fact acquired, resilience and perseverance like never before. I applaud you for your courage, self-discipline and determination that have brought you to CUHK, and they will serve you very well at the University and throughout your lives.”

He emphasised the University’s objective to cultivate students to become global citizens, equipping them with the necessary skills, values and behaviour to thrive in a more diverse and interconnected world. Professor Tuan showcased CUHK’s inclusive, multicultural campus; thoughtfully curated curriculum; variety of internships and exchange programmes; and community services that provide students with a rich learning experience. In addition, he reminded them that CUHK will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2023, and all new students are welcome to take part in this major milestone in CUHK’s history.
