The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) held its 91st Congregation for the Conferment of Degrees today (24 November). Professor John Y. Chai, Chairman of the CUHK Council, presided at the Congregation and Vice-Chancellor Professor Rocky S. Tuan delivered an address. The day’s celebrations commenced with a formal flag raising ceremony where the national flag of the People’s Republic of China, the flag of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and the CUHK flag were raised to the playing and singing of the national anthem.

CUHK confers honorary doctorates upon five distinguished people

Five distinguished people were awarded honorary degrees in recognition of their outstanding contributions in public welfare, scientific and educational progress, and the promotion of human health. They are: Mr Reinaldo M. Cordeiro (aka Uncle Ray), Professor Hao Ping, Ms Irene Lee Yun-lien, Professor Sir Michael Marmot and Professor Joseph Sung Jao-yiu (in alphabetical order of family name).

Professor Sir Michael Marmot was awarded the degree of Science, honoris causa. Mr Reinaldo M. Cordeiro and Ms Irene Lee Yun-lien were awarded the degree of Doctor of Social Science, honoris causa. Professor Hao Ping and Professor Joseph Sung Jao-yiu were awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa. Mr Cordeiro and Professor Hao were unable to attend the Congregation. The University conferred the degree on them in absentia.

Doctoral, Master’s and Bachelor’s Degree Graduates in 2022

A total of 531 doctoral degrees, 7,597 master’s degrees and 5,190 bachelor’s degrees were conferred at the Congregation. Among the latter were 596 Bachelors of Arts, 1,306 Bachelors of Business Administration, 1 Bachelor of Business Administration and of Social Science, 42 Bachelors of Arts and of Education, 49 Bachelors of Education, 615 Bachelors of Engineering, 75 Bachelors of Laws, 31 Bachelors of Chinese Medicine, 245 Bachelors of Medicine and of Surgery, 242 Bachelors of Nursing, 40 Bachelors of Pharmacy, 1,246 Bachelors of Science, and 659 Bachelors of Social Science.
