Professional Diploma Programme in Chinese Medicine (Stroke and Brain Related Diseases)

Programme Background and Objectives
This programme aims to provide Chinese medicine (CM) professional training in the area of stroke and brain related disease, with emphasis on practical exposure in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
It will also facilitate inter-professional learning with other health professionals, as well as exposure to introductory clinical research methodology.
Expected Programme Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the programme, graduates will have acquired the competency of :
1. Consolidating both traditional and contemporary knowledge on stroke and brain related diseases in CM; and to apply clinical reasoning skills in this area.
2. Mastering the clinical application of various CM treatment modalities including, but not limited to, Chinese herbal medicines, acupuncture and moxibustion, tuina and health preservation interventions.
3. Evaluating and applying current research evidence underpinning CM diagnosis and management of stroke and brain related diseases.
Entry Requirements
Applicants should:
1. have a Bachelor’s degree or above; and
2. be a registered Chinese Medicine Practitioner with a valid practicing certificate from the Chinese Medicine Council of Hong Kong; and
3. possess at least 1 year’s post-registration working experience.

Course 1: Chinese Medicine Principles and Pathologies in Stroke and Brain Related Diseases (中風及腦相關疾病的中醫病因病機) (Contact hours: 36 hours) |
This course focuses on etiological, prognostic and pathological knowledge of stroke and brain related disorders from a CM perspective. |
Course 2: Chinese Medicine Diagnosis and Management in Stroke and Brain Related Diseases (中風及腦相關疾病的中醫診治方法) (Contact hours: 72 hours) |
This course focuses on diagnostic and therapeutic knowledge of stroke and brain related disorders from a CM perspective. |
Course 3: Current Practices of Stroke and Brain Related Diseases Management in Western Medicine (西醫診治中風及腦相關疾病方法新知) (Contact hours: 33 hours) |
This course focuses on etiological, pathological, prognostic, diagnostic and therapeutic knowledge of stroke and brain related disorders from a biomedicine perspective. |
Course 4: Multi-disciplinary Cooperation in Stroke and Brain Related Diseases Management (跨專業合作診治中風及腦相關疾病) (Contact hours:33 hours) |
The course introduces current practices of different professionals, such as nursing, allied health professions and social workers in the management of patients with stroke and brain related disorders. |
Course 5: Research Methodology and Thesis in Chinese Medicine (中醫學研究方法及論文) (Contact hours:24 hours) |
This course introduces basic clinical research methodologies commonly used in Chinese medicine.
At the end of the course, the students are required to submit a report on topics related to Chinese medicine research in the area of stroke and brain related disorder.

Course 6: Clinical Practicum (臨床實習) (Contact hours: 264 hours) |
In this course, each student is required to complete 260 hours of inpatient and outpatient clinical practicum in the area of stroke and brain related diseases. |
Assessment Methods
Including but not limited to: Written examination, assignment, presentation, practical examination, case studies, project, and class participation.
Graduation Requirement
To be awarded the Professional Diploma, students are required to:
1. have an attendance rate of 70% or above in each course; and
2. fulfill courses requirements; and
3. pass the assessment/examination of each course with an overall GPA not lower than 2.00
