Chinese Language Proficiency Courses

For students who are admitted in 2022-23 and thereafter

The University Chinese courses are offered by the Department of Chinese Language and Literature which aim at improving students’ Chinese literacy. The courses cover various fundamental language and literary knowledge, cultivating students’ language awareness alongside their analytical, commentating, creative, expressing, writing, and self-learning abilities through appreciation of classics in order to provide students with comprehensive and practical Chinese teaching.

Students who complete the courses will be able to 

  1. master the basic knowledge of the Chinese language;

  2. develop language awareness; 

  3. improve analytical and commentating skills;

  4. strengthen communication and expression abilities; 

  5. demonstrate proficiency in Chinese writing and apply the knowledge and skills to real-world situations; 

  6. enhance Chinese cultural literacy;

  7. acquire self-learning strategies.

The University Chinese courses are offered to satisfy of the University Chinese Core Requirements. CHLT 1001 “University Chinese I” and CHLT 1002 “University Chinese II” are mainly for JUPAS entrants. Apart from the these two courses, various types of language enhancement courses are offered for non-JUPAS students, such as CHLT 1204 “Chinese Language Communication and Application I” and CHLT 1205 “Chinese Language Communication and Application II” which are elementary courses for students with heterogeneous backgrounds, and CHLT 1104 “Elementary Self-Learning Chinese” and CHLT 1105 “Self-Learning Chinese”, which are non-credit bearing self-learning Chinese courses for students with advanced standing who are exempted from the Chinese Language courses of the University Core Requirements.

For students who were admitted in 2021-22 and before

The University Chinese Courses are offered by the Department of Chinese Language and Literature which aim at laying a solid Chinese language foundation for students. The courses cultivating students’ language awareness alongside their observation and critical thinking abilities in order to provide comprehensive and practical Chinese teaching on fundamental language and literary knowledge.

The University Chinese Core is mainly comprised of two 3-unit courses, CHLT 1100 University Chinese I and CHLT 1200 University Chinese II for JUPAS entrants. Apart from the above courses, various types of language enhancement courses are offered for Non-JUPAS students, such as CHLT 1102 University Elementary Chinese I and CHLT 1202 University Elementary Chinese II which are elementary courses for students with heterogeneous backgrounds, and CHLT 1104 Elementary Self-Learning Chinese and CHLT 1105 Self-Learning Chinese, which are non-credit bearing self-learning Chinese courses for students with advanced standing who are exempted from the Chinese Language Courses of the University Core Requirements.

Course Registration Information

For students who are admitted in 2022-23 and thereafter

All students will be pre-assigned to the Chinese courses according to their Faculties in the first and second year of attendance. Students may swap classes within the time slots of their respective Faculty during course registration and add/drop period. 

The University Core Requirements are applicable to all students who were admitted to the four year curriculum through JUPAS or Non-JUPAS. Students may apply for the exemption from taking Chinese courses by attaining the following conditions:

1. All students (including local and international students) who fulfill requirements listed in “Exemptions by Attainment from the University Chinese and English Language Requirements” are eligible to apply the exemption from taking CHLT1001 and CHLT1002. Students are required to submit the “Exemption by Attainment” application form (Click to Download) to the Registration and Examinations Section (RES) by the deadline.  Late applications will not be considered. 

2. The Non-JUPAS students admitted with Advanced Standing are exempted from taking CHLT1001 and CHLT1002. Students who do not fulfill the Chinese language requirements listed in “Exemptions by Attainment from the University Chinese and English Language Requirements” are required to complete CHLT1105 to replace CHLT 1001 and CHLT 1002. Students exempted by Senate from the Chinese language requirements for admission will be assigned “Self-Learning Elementary Chinese” (CHL1104) to replace the University Chinese in their first year of attendance according to their faculties.

3. Local students admitted through Non-JUPAS who have been exempted by Senate from the Chinese language requirements for admission will need to approach the Department of Chinese Language and Literature on their own for an assessment. Recommendations will be made by the Department to the Registrar for the appropriate Chinese language courses to be taken by students concerned for fulfillment of the requirements.

Faculty of Medicine: 2nd Term (Special arrangements will be made to MBChB students by their Faculty Office and Offices concerned.)

Faculty of Science: 2nd Term

Faculty of Social Science: 2nd Term (Students of the Contemporary China Studies Programme will be pre-assigned CHLT 1200 (University Chinese II) in their first semester of the second year of attendance.)

Faculty of Law: Students of LLB Programme will not be pre-assigned University Chinese courses. Faculty will provide information to the Registration and Examinations Section on course fulfillment.
