林永昌助理教授主要在中國大陸進行考古田野工作。他的研究方向是商周與秦漢時期的經濟體系與社會變遷。他的研究主要結合不同的分析技術，包括冶金分析、動物考古學和地理信息系統(GIS)，以分析考古學中的手工業生產和交換網絡。目前的他在中國南方開展項目，分析漢代的交換網絡。
