Meeting with Mainland Undergraduate Association (MUA) (23-11-2018)
Prof. Edwin Chan met with the Mainland Undergraduate Association (MUA) again in November 2018. At the meeting, mental health concerns of mainland students were discussed, leaving room for further collaboration between MUA and the Wellness and Counselling Centre, OSA. Besides, constructive ideas regarding telephone fraud prevention for mainland students were concurred. Lastly, issues related to hostel policy, off-campus living, and PE additional scores revealed by MUA were explored.
Tea Gathering with Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA) (22-11-2018)
Prof. Edwin Chan had an annual tea gathering with CSSA in late November. The five representatives from CSSA eagerly shared their opinions about a wide range of topics with Professor Chan, covering study, student activities, accommodation and daily life. Professor Chan also gave his valuable advice and feedback to the students. All the participants seemed to be enjoying the gathering in such a relaxing vibe of the new café.
Meeting with Student Senators on the support services of mental wellness (09-11-2018)
To address the concerns of student senators on the support of mental wellness, a meeting was arranged for Professor Dennis Ng, Pro-Vice-Chancellor/Vice-President, Professor Edwin Chan, Associate Vice-President and University Dean of Students and Ms. Agnes Ho, Director of Student Affairs, to listen to the voices of students. Professor Ng shared the difficulties that the University is facing in handling the complicated psychological issues, the current support provided and possible improvements in communication on handling emotional and psychological cases. The University would continue to enlist support from central administrative units, colleges and faculties in cultivating a caring campus. The discussion was fruitful and opinions from student senators would be conducive to the university’s commitment in promoting positive psychology and boosting students’ mental wellness.
Breakfast meeting with special educational needs (SEN) students (28-09-2018)
Professor Edwin Chan, Associate Vice-President and University Dean of Students, values communications with students and schedules regular meetings with SEN students to obtain their feedbacks on the University’s support services. This term, 11 students attended the meeting with Professor Chan and Ms. Agnes Ho, Director of Student Affairs, also joined the meeting. First-year students expressed their thoughts regarding campus accessibility (e.g., the need of introducing accessible food menu for students with visual impairment and enhancing accessibility of the learning e-platforms; senior students also shared their experience of adjustment and overcoming challenges with new students). Professor Chan and Ms. Ho concerned about students’ whole-person development and encouraged participation in extra-curricular activities. They actively responded to students’ questions and provided guidance and advice for students in achieving their goals.
Dessert cooking gathering with student leaders (28-09-2018)
Various student leaders from student associations were invited to attend a dessert-making gathering with Professor Edwin Chan, Associate Vice-President and University Dean of Students, and Ms. Agnes Ho, Director of Student Affairs on 28 September 2018. The word STRESSED is DESSERTS spelled backwards. Thus, making desserts is a good way to release study stress before mid-term examinations. Around 30 student leaders spent a relaxing afternoon making yummy fruit tarts with Professor Chan and Ms. Ho. They also exchanged thoughts and ideas on how to running student societies.
Tea gathering with student leaders (24-09-2018)
To welcome the new Director of Student Affairs, Ms. Agnes Ho and to celebrate the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, Professor Edwin Chan, Associate Vice-President and University Dean of Students, invite Professor Dennis Ng, Pro-Vice-Chancellor/Vice-President, and various student leaders to join a tea gathering on 24 September evening. 14 enthusiastic student representatives from Student Union, College Student Unions and Student Senators joined the gathering, they were invited to exchange their thoughts and ideas on recent campus affairs, like school bus schedule, mental health issues and other administrative/academic issues with Professor Ng, Professor Chan and Ms Ho. The gathering was filled with a warm atmosphere and hope for a fresh start in the new academic year.
Meeting with Mainland Undergraduate Association (MUA) (20-4-2018)
At the lunch meeting with the Mainland Undergraduate Association (MUA) in April 2018, Professor Edwin Chan, Associate Vice-President and University Dean of Students discussed the events organized by MUA, addressed to the concerns, e.g. O’camp preparation, hostel policy and off-campus living, raised by the representatives, and encouraged initiatives in internationalization/ cultural integration on campus via the collaboration with other student groups/ associations.
Meeting with International Student Associations (7-3-2018)
To listen to the voices of more students, Professor Edwin Chan, Associate Vice-President and University Dean of Students, invited representatives of various international student associations to a lunch meeting on 7 March. The representatives expressed their opinions and feelings towards different aspects of campus life such as accommodation, extra-curricular activities and campus facilities etc. Professor Chan actively responded to various concerns of the representatives. A fruitful dialogue was yielded in a relaxing mood.
Lunch meeting with the Postgraduate Student Association (2-3-2018)
To understand the needs of postgraduate students, Professor Edwin Chan, Associate Vice-President and University Dean of Students met with six executive committee members of the Postgraduate Student Association of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUPSA) in early March 2018. During the meeting, CUPSA revealed postgraduates’ needs for career planning and development, as well as their plans of promoting cultural diversity on campus. Professor Chan shared handy tips of enriching postgraduates’ university life and engaging them in campus activities.
