Inauguration of the CUHK and Fudan University Joint Research Centre in Life and Biomedical Sciences
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Fudan University (FDU) jointly established the CUHK-FDU Joint Research Centre in Life and Biomedical Sciences (the Centre). The inauguration ceremony of the Centre was held on 30 June 2021 via online and in person modes simultaneously. Professor Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, and Professor Xu Ning-Sheng, President of FDU, officiated at the ceremony for the plaque unveiling and signing the collaboration agreement of the establishment.
Professor Tuan and Professor Xu gave speeches to indicate support for the joint establishment. Co-directors of the Center, Professor Chan Andrew Chan, Director of CUHK School of Biomedical Sciences; and Professor Lin Xin-Hua, Dean of FDU School of Life Science delivered report on the development plan to the participants. The Centre aspires to serve as a new chapter of joint efforts to enhance academic exchange and promote research development in life and biomedical science.
Research teams of CUHK and FDU have been collaborating closely for many years. The Center will focus on a range of research fields related to life sciences and biomedical sciences, including Genomics and Inherited Diseases, Phenomics and Precision Medicine, Developmental, Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology, and interdisciplinary studies with intersections on healthy and diseased human body from multiple dimensions of molecules, cells and tissues towards an integration of different disciplines and research areas for systematic outcomes. It will carry out cross-regional and cross-disciplinary collaborations, striving to build cutting-edge base and cultivate talents, as well as providing an exchange platform for researchers from all over the world.
CUHK and Zhejiang University Hold Partnership Steering Committee Meeting
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Zhejiang University (ZJU) held the 1st meeting of Partnership Steering Committee online on 23 June to discuss existing and future bilateral cooperation plans. Both Presidents renewed the academic exchange agreement to continue the partnership developments between the two universities.
CUHK participants joining the meeting comprised of Professor Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor; Professor Fok Tai-Fai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor; Professor Tsang Hon-Ki, Acting Dean of Faculty of Engineering as well as Co-director of Joint Centre for Advanced Photonics Research of CUHK and ZJU; Professor Jimmy Lee, Associate Dean of Faulty of Engineering; Professor Xu Jiang, Associate Dean of Faculty of Social Science; Prof. Stephen Tsui, Associate Director of School of Biomedical Sciences as well as Co-director of CUHK-ZJU Joint Laboratory on Natural Products and Toxicology Research; Professor Chan Chun Kwong of Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management; Professor Michael Song of Department of Economics; and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of Academic Links (China). President Professor Wu Zhao-Hui of ZJU participated in the meeting and he was accompanied by Professor He Lian-Zhen, Vice President; Professor Dai Dao-Xin, Deputy Dean of College of Optical Science and Engineering and Co-director of Joint Centre for Advanced Photonics Research of CUHK and ZJU; Professor Yu Lu-Yang, Assistant Dean of College of Life Sciences; Professor Liu Fei-Yan and Professor Wu Shi-Hua from the College of Life Sciences; Professor Zhu Xi-Wei, Assistant Dean of College of Economics; Professor Ben Sheng-Lin and Professor Chen Hong-Yi, Dean and Assistant Dean of International Business School; and Ms. Li Min, Director of Hong Kong Macau and Taiwan Affairs Office.
The two parties discussed the development of existing cooperation projects at the meeting, such as Joint Centre for Advanced Photonics Research of CUHK and ZJU, and CUHK-ZHU Joint Laboratory on Natural Products and Toxicology Research. Representatives reported the progress on new cooperation projects including the Digital Economy Joint Research Center, and the dual master programme between ZJU International Business School and CUHK Faculty of Engineering. Professor Tuan and Professor Wu provided suggestions and directions in advancing the joint development with indicated support. Both sides will be committed to further encouraging collaborations in the developments of the Greater Bay Area and the Yangtze River Delta.
Since the establishment of partnership in 1991, CUHK has been collaborating closely with ZJU via a range of projects in research, supervision of postgraduates and student interflow. Both universities are members of the Worldwide Universities Network, Cross-Strait Green University Consortium and Association of University Presidents of China, and have jointly established research units in biomedical engineering, natural products research, and advanced photonics. The meeting further enhanced communication and bolstered the partnership development between the two universities, building closer collaboration platforms.
