Prof. Chan Wai-yee, Director of School of Biomedical Sciences, was invited to attend a planning meeting for establishing the “Guangdong Province Regenerative Medicine and Health Research Institute” held in Guangzhou on 12 March 2017, which was spearheaded by the Guangdong Science and Technology Department and Guangzhou Municipal Government.
During the meeting, a proposal on the establishment of the “Guangdong Province Regenerative Medicine and Health Research Institute” was introduced by Prof. Pei Duanqing, Director of Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health, Chinese Academy of Sciences, followed by a discussion for laying down a plan for establishing the Research Institute and subsequently a state-owned laboratory of regenerative medicine. Apart from Prof. Chan who represented The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prof. Paul H.K. Tam, Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of The University of Hong Kong and Prof. Wang Yitao, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine of the University of Macao, as well as around 30 local representatives attended the meeting, including Dr. Zhang Yaping, Vice-President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), provincial officials of Guangdong province, municipal officials of Guangzhou, heads of medical universities and research institutes of the related fields in Guangdong province, senior management of several major biotech companies in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
With our participation in the planning stage of the Research Institute, it is hoped that our University will be playing a pivotal role in supporting the national strategy in innovation and technology for enhancing the development of medicine and health.
