After a summer of continued disruption from COVID-19 and at the start of an academic year unlike any we have known, I was delighted to once again welcome new students and old friends to CUHK Library. In response to the pandemic the Library’s orientation and workshops are fully online this year, and digital first has become our motto. Our expansive digital collections have been well used with usage increasing. We buy digital material whenever we can, but we know not everything is digital and many of you still require access to our print collections. A book retrieval service centralised at the University Library at the height of the pandemic, followed by the same service in each library, is now part of our pandemic toolbox.

Launch of the Beta Version

The Hong Kong Literature Database (HKLD) has been in use for more than two decades since its launched on 15 June 2000. Currently, the database consists of nearly 588,000 records, and its rich content has attracted local and overseas researchers ever since. In 2019, the usage was over 5.6 million. To match the increasing demands of users, the CUHK Library started last year to revamp the HKLD platform and enhance its search capabilities.

Monica YOUNG, Head of Electronic Resources Management

What is your career journey?

I started my career in academic Libraries in Hong Kong after finishing my studies in Australia. As a young professional, I had put my knowledge into practice and also earned a lot of experience in serials management and audio-visual acquisition at that time. Due to my education background, I got an opportunity to be deployed to deal with library technology and systems which definitely built on my expertise in library automation.
