This study is a pioneer attempt to explore the political and cultural implications of Buddhism during the crucial intellectual transitional period between 1890 and 1911 by examining the Buddhist thought of Liang Qichao, Kang Youwei, Zhang Binglin, and particularly Tan Sitong.
