Project Objectives
CUHK has launched an Entry Survey that captures incoming students’ demographic characteristics, learning habits, their perception of their various capabilities, and their expectations on university education. The main purpose of the survey, of course, is to help faculty and staff alike to understand better the incoming batch of students. The thrust of this three-year project, therefore, is a series of advanced statistical analyses of the survey data. The objective is to derive findings that will be helpful to the current work of various university units, including faculties, departments, and other supporting units. For instance, the findings may help or facilitate programme designs and policy making that aim to enhance teaching and learning at the university.
Key deliverables expected and timelines for completion
The timeline of the stages of the project, together with the corresponding deliverables, are as follows:
Stage 1: Conduct basic statistical analyses, such as basic comparisons, to develop preliminary results for timely dissemination and feedback collection (to be completed by March 2013).
Stage 2: Conduct advanced statistical data analyses to produce detailed reports, with provisions for meaningful comparisons (e.g. HKDSE vs. HKALE entrants, students admitted to different colleges/faculties, etc) (to be completed by June 2013).
Stage 3: Collect feedback to refine any components in the process deemed necessary (to be completed by August 2013).
Stage 4: Repeat the above cycle (1-3) for each batch of incoming students that fall into the present triennium (i.e., for incoming students in 2013 and 2014).
Stage 5: Conduct comprehensive analyses of the survey results obtained in the years 2012 to 2014 with a view to identifying areas for further exploration (March to June 2015).
Arrangements for evaluation of project deliverables/outcomes
The entire survey process and results will be evaluated and refined in a continuous manner according to feedback and suggestions from all stakeholders.
Means for disseminating project deliverables/outcomes
Results will be disseminated regularly to Programmes, Faculties, Colleges, and other relevant units through a variety of channels: annual reports, formal meetings and presentations, themed workshops, and websites.
