Brief write-up
Project objectives
In alignment with the University’s strategic development to prepare students for global citizenship and leadership, we propose to consolidate and re-articulate the different components of the existing GE Programme to enhance students’ global knowledge and intercultural competencies. The project now renamed as “GE Study Scheme in Global Learning” which combines students’ academic experiences in General Education with their extra-curricular engagement.
Activities, process and outcomes
A new cross-disciplinary GE course UGEC2819 Grand Challenges for Global Citizens in the 21st Century was launched in the first term of 2018-19. The course has received favorable reviews from students. In the course and teaching evaluation, UGEC2819 has received 5.43/6 for course satisfaction rate. The quality of student presentations in the form of TED talks and their final report is very satisfactory. The same course will be offered again in the second term of 2019-20 and the re-run of the course will make the 17 Sustainable Development Goals a more prominent theme.
Deliverables and evaluation
The project aligns with the current Academic Development Planning exercise of the University which values two themes and related pedagogy that can enhance students’ capabilities in innovation and design thinking on the one hand, and foster their awareness and attitude of global citizenship and enterprisingness on the other. The inter-disciplinary course forms a community of experts among faculty members. Two members of the teaching team, Professor Wong Hung and Professor Lam Hon-Ming have lined up a team of scientists, social workers and volunteers to develop safe, effective, affordable and sustainable solutions for low-income residents in Hong Kong to tackle bed bug problems since December 2018.
Dissemination, diffusion, impact and sharing of good practices
In August 2018, with the help of the CUHK Audio-Visual Division, a promotional video has been produced and uploaded online to promote UGEC2819, the new GE course. The video introduces the teaching team and their topics covered in the course. Throughout the first term of 2018/19, the lectures of the pilot run of UGEC2819 were recorded by CUHK Audio-Visual Division. The videos are used for references for potential development of a MOOC course. In December 2018, a poster about the offering of UGEC2819 was presented at the 2018 Institute on General Education cum Teacher and Student Conference organized by the Office of University General Education, CUHK as the inter-disciplinary course is highly relevant to the theme of the Institute: “General Education in Global Citizenship: Positioning and Engagement”.
