Project Objectives
Good scientists, technology pioneers, and society leaders all possess multidimensional capacities and potentials. This project is to encourage science students to enrich themselves with non-science training and provide opportunities for science students to share their non-science endeavor.
Description of process, outcomes or deliverables
Promotion activities were organized to introduce the scheme and give examples of learning opportunities that may be supported. Miss Kiki Ng, an undergraduate student of the Department of Mathematics, submitted her first artwork exhibition proposal to apply our scheme. The exhibition aims to show the beauty of mathematics through artworks involving geometric sculptures and patterns. Vetted and advised by our monitoring and assessment panel, the exhibition was held on the Ground Floor of Science Centre from 22 to 30 June 2016 successfully. Kiki designed and created a series of geometric sculptures to show how mathematics can be expressed in an artistic way to the public. The exhibition not only catch the eyeballs of CUHKers and CUHK visitors but also drew the attention of reporters including Ming Pao and Sing Tao Daily. This exhibition was definitely a valuable opportunity for science students to share their non-science endeavor and a convincing evidence of inter-disciplinary bridging achievement.
Evaluation
Feedbacks from participating students were collected by both quantitative and qualitative approaches to examine the effectiveness of the scheme and students’ achievement in terms of intended learning outcomes. Students highlighted that our scheme acts as catalyst to encourage them to broaden and extend their learning areas beyond sciences and provides opportunities for them to share their non-science endeavor.
Dissemination, diffusion and impact
A Facebook page was established and updated in a continuous manner for the purpose of promotion and dissemination of relevant information. Two local newspapers, Ming Pao and Sing Tao Daily, interviewed participants and promoted the exhibition on their papers. CUHK Newsletter is going to publish an article on Science Crossover in mid-September of 2016. We believe the ideas of our scheme can definitely reach a large scale of people apart from CUHK science students.
