Project Objectives

Construct a cloud-based multiple-sessions collaborative platform to: (1) facilitate the learning of all students within groups and across groups; and (2) support interactive learning between teachers and students.

Description of process, outcomes or deliverables

Process: Flipped Learning in the Cloud (Office 365 + SharePoint)

Outcomes:

    Teacher:
  • number of email from students dropped from ~500 to ~70 a year (teaching load: 21 credits, taking care of ~380 students)
  • easy to engage students for participating the flipped learning activities (e.g. course survey)
  • can have more quality time to design more course activities
    Student:
  • fast response from teacher and peer via the Course SharePoint Site,
  • help them understand Business Information Systems (DSME 2051) easier
  • Motivate them do more research before/ after class
  • Encourage them to share more information/ knowledge with peer group

Deliverables:
Course materials for the following courses on SharePoint:
  • “Business Information Systems” (DSME2051) (~290 students, 3 sessions for term 1 + 3 sessions for term 2)
  • “Strategic Information Systems” (DSME5210) (60 students)
  • “Data Mining for Business Intelligence” (DSME 4220) (30 students)
  • “Idea of a University: STOT” (GECC1131) (14 students)

We use SharePoint’s Survey to collect data from students (both in class + off class):


Dissemination, diffusion and impact

Dissemination:

  • (1) “Pilot Testing: Flipped Learning in the Cloud” at the Teaching and Learning Innovation Expo 2015, awarded (1) Poster Commendation; and (2) People’s Prize
  • (2) “Pilot Testing: Flipped Learning in the Cloud” at the Teaching and Learning Brown Bag Discussion on 15 April 2016, organized by the Teaching and Learning Office, Faculty of Business Administration
Diffusion:

After giving a talk on 15 April 2016 for the Teaching and Learning Brown Bag discussion, many colleagues are interested in knowing more. Thus, I combined the research output from my TDG project 2012–15 “Student Oriented Cross Units Communication Platform” to help some of them to do the business process study with our student team, as follows:
  • (1) Finished a beta version of experience-based learning project – SharePoint Site on Student Tenant of the Undergraduate Office of the Faculty of Business Administration
  • (2) Prepared an introduction session for CW Chu College for all Year One students on 9 September 2016
  • (3) Helping to set up a site map for the School of Hotel and Tourism Management as a blue print of their SharePoint Site
  • (4) Sharing our experience with the Centre for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning, University of Hong Kong
  • (5) Sharing our experience with the CUHK Medical Center Planning Office
  • (6) Link with Microsoft Hong Kong to come to CUHK Campus to provide two cycles of training for our staff and students
Impact:
  • (1) For the 2016–17 academic year, I am going to apply “Flipped learning in the cloud” at the brand new Interactive Classroom for pilot testing. I set the target as 100% flipped learning.
  • (2) Flipped learning in the cloud is not only designed for the Faculty of Business Administration, but also suitable for other disciplines when the teacher in charge is ready.
