CUHK has continued to play a leading and prominent role in the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) in the past few months. As co-chair of the International Policy Advisory Committee, Provost Prof. Alan Chan co-chaired the virtual APRU Senior International Leaders’ Week in October to consider how universities can plan for the future as the world begins to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The University has also gained much visibility in the global arena by hosting events and by having many of its members serving as conference speakers.

  • Global MOOC and Online Education Conference 2021
At a sub-forum of the captioned conference on virtual mobility and co-curricular programming led and co-chaired by APRU, Prof. Alan Chan gave a keynote address to highlight how educational technology has created new opportunities for global learning and academic exchange. Ms. Shally Fan, Director of Academic Links, also shared her experience in developing virtual programmes in the same session.

  • APRU ‘Global Perspectives on Anti-Asian Racism: Overcoming the Hate’ Webinar Series
To open the door for more understanding of racially targeted hate and the ways that these ideas circulate and influence our daily lives, APRU hosted a webinar series in partnership with CUHK and other members. Prof. Ying-yi Hong from the Department of Management spoke in the webinar on 18 November, providing a space for reflection, analysis, solidarity, and activism to explore anti-Asian hate in a global context.

Besides, CUHK takes part in the APRU Asia Pacific Women in Leadership (APWiL) Mentoring Programme, which features a year-long attachment of mentors and mentees across the participating institutions to groom women leaders. Prof. Surabhi Chopra of the Faculty of Law, a mentee of the first cohort, was grateful for the opportunity to receive mentoring from Prof. Cindy Fan, Vice Provost, International Studies and Global Engagement of the University of California, Los Angeles, and gave a speech at the graduation ceremony in October.

Prof. Chopra said, ‘The conversations with my mentor were genuinely encouraging and insightful. Through the regular meetings, I have identified roles where I would like to make a contribution in the coming years and worked on the skills relevant to these roles. While the programme focused on academic service and leadership, I also found it helpful in thinking about my trajectory as a scholar and teacher.’
