Change Major, Declare 2nd Major, Change Study Period
and Register 2nd Degree, 2018-19
- Change Major
Application period : 1 – 28 June 2018- Students who apply for change of major should refer to the notices of departments about the requirements and observe their procedures. The student should have satisfied at least one of the following minimum conditions, as prescribed by the Senate, for change of major:
- the student has taken course(s) of at least 6 units with an average grade of not less than B- that would count towards the major requirements of the transfer-in programme; or
- the admission WGPA score (e.g. HKDSE) of the student must be better than the student at the lowest decile who had been successfully admitted to the programme concerned in the same year that s/he was first admitted to the University; or
- the student has attained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above in the current academic year.
- the student has taken course(s) of at least 6 units with an average grade of not less than B- that would count towards the major requirements of the transfer-in programme; or
- Except students admitted to broad-based programmes, students MUST submit the application for change of major under CUSIS (select “Program Change”) on or before 28 June, indicating fulfillment of at least one of the conditions listed in (1) above, and upload their document, if applicable, for departments’ reference. Students should also observe other requirements, e.g. interview, test, etc., if any, as required by concerned departments. For detailed system walkthrough, please refer to information posted under RES homepage (click “CUSIS System Functions” under “Quick Links”).
- Students admitted to broad-based programmes (e.g. Social Science, Science, Engineering etc.) MUST obtain the hardcopy application form from RES (either at counter, or by sending an e-mail, so that RES staff can check and advise details) if they wish to change major. They cannot apply via CUSIS.
- Departments will indicate approval or not under CUSIS during 29 June – 6 July. Students are required to confirm their acceptance of the NEW major (for approval cases) from 7 – 11 July. Once a new major is accepted, all other application(s), if any, will be rejected automatically. This confirmation means the final decision.
- Students concerned will receive a formal approval letter from RES concerning the change of major by late July.
- Students who apply for change of major should refer to the notices of departments about the requirements and observe their procedures. The student should have satisfied at least one of the following minimum conditions, as prescribed by the Senate, for change of major:
- Declare Second Major
- With the approval of the first and second major departments, students may declare a second major at the start of the last term of attendance within the normative study period.
Application Period : 1st term : 10 – 21 September 2018
2nd term : 14 – 25 January 2019 - Students can make inquiries to the second major department and express in writing the intention of declaring the second major at least one term before the registration for the second major.
- Before making the declaration, students must have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above in all the courses taken before the last term of attendance within the normative study period, and must have completed/registered for all course requirements for graduation purposes in the first major (including Faculty/University/College requirements) at the time the declaration of second major is made.
- The application form for “Declaration of a Second Major” is obtainable from RES within the add/drop period of each term. Students permitted to declare a second major should submit the approved form to RES by the close of the application period listed above.
- For details of “Double Major Programmes”, please refer to the homepage of Academic and Quality Section: http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/aqs/.
- Students who have declared double major and cannot complete the requirements of the first or second major within the normative study period will be charged a prescribed fee for the remaining units of courses according to the fee schedule on RES homepage. The fees and charges may be subject to change after annual review.
- With the approval of the first and second major departments, students may declare a second major at the start of the last term of attendance within the normative study period.
- Change Study Period
Application period: 1 – 28 June 2018*
* The above application period is NOT applicable to students whose expected year/ term of graduation (EYG) is 2nd term 2017-18. Graduating students should refer to “Important Information for Graduating Students in 2nd term 2017-18” on RES homepage for change of the expected year/term of graduation- For old curriculum students, please take note of clause 5.1 and 5.2 of the General Regulations Governing Full-time Undergraduate Studies (for students admitted to the 3-year curriculum) and take appropriate action, if necessary.
For new curriculum students, please observe below clause 3.1 and 3.2 of the General Regulations Governing Full-time Undergraduate Studies (for students admitted to the 4-year curriculum).
3.1 The normative study period of all Major Programmes is four years except for certain programmes as detailed and defined in the Annex. Students are expected to graduate at the end of the normative study period, except for (a) students admitted with Advanced Standing; (b) students granted course and unit exemptions; and (c) students who have applied in accordance with Regulation 3.2 and obtained approval for alteration of their periods of study.
3.2 A student may according to the prescribed procedures and within the specified period apply with valid reasons on a prescribed form to the Registrar for approval for alteration of his/her period of study. Shortening of the normative study period should be made 18 months before the expected graduation term while extension beyond the normative study period should only be made within the specified application period before the commencement of the last year of attendance of the normative study period. No such application, however, shall normally be accepted after the commencement of a student’s expected graduation term. - Students (excluding students with EYG in 2nd term 2017-18) who need to change their study period should send e-mail enquiry to RES (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) to check the eligibility or necessity of such applications. Eligible students will be given the prescribed application form through email and students should take the appropriate actions by the specified deadline, as instructed.
- Students who have to take courses for fulfilment of first major, second major/second degree or other graduation requirements beyond the normative study period should observe the fee schedule posted on RES homepage. The fees and charges may be subject to change after annual review.
- For old curriculum students, please take note of clause 5.1 and 5.2 of the General Regulations Governing Full-time Undergraduate Studies (for students admitted to the 3-year curriculum) and take appropriate action, if necessary.
- Register Second Degree
Application period : 7 – 25 May 2018- Students should refer to the Undergraduate Student Handbook for the list of the second degree programmes.
- For students who have been pursuing the double degree options, they should have already indicated their interest and have registered courses for the double degree under the arrangements of concerned major programmes or Faculty. Some students will fulfill all graduation requirements for the 1st degree in this academic term, and some may fulfill both the 1st degree and 2nd degree in the coming academic year 2018-19. Since the University needs to process the graduation assessment in June and prepare the administrative arrangements for registration of these students to the second degree, concerned students should obtain the form “Declaration Form for Registration of Second Degree” from the major programme or the Faculty of the 1st degree and return the completed form to major programme or Faculty on or before 25 May 2018.
- Students should fulfill all requirements as stipulated by the concerned programmes for registration of the 2nd degree. The fee for the double degree programme will apply once students register in the 2nd degree programme. Students should be assessed for the graduation requirements of 1st degree prior to the 2nd degree. Students who fulfill all graduation requirements in this academic term for the 1st degree will be assessed and the graduation results will be released in late July; and the degree will be conferred in the Congregation held tentatively in November 2018.

For students who have been pursuing the double degree options, they should have already indicated their interest and have registered courses for the double degree under the arrangements of concerned major programmes or Faculty.
