Message from the Head of Graduate Division

Dr Guy LJ CHEN

Our Department provides high standard integrated training in both laboratory and clinical sciences in ophthalmology. Research in our Department mainly includes randomized controlled trials, epidemiology, disease risk factor identification, ocular imaging, animal models, ocular stem cell, cellular biology, gene function, and molecular and clinical genetics of major eye diseases, including glaucoma, myopia, age-related macular degeneration, polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy, diabetic retinopathy, corneal dystrophy, and retinoblastoma.

Whilst postgraduate students in our Department will receive both in-depth and multidisciplinary training based on research projects, they should also fulfill basic requirements on course planning from the University. Moreover, we request each student to be hardworking, honest, and helpful, so that he/she can form good team spirit, and become an honorable researcher / doctor.

Message from the Associate Head of Graduate Division

Dr CHU Wai Kit

Postgraduate students are important members of our department. Students are trained and encouraged to have insightful scientific minds, delicate research skills and honourable spirits. There are various patient orientated research projects covering both laboratory and clinical sciences in ophthalmology. We strive for excellence and nurture our students to be future leaders.

Our Department conducts full-time and part-time Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) research programmes. We have established an MPhil and PhD education platform, pertaining to personal education and aiming for academic excellence.

We provide an environment for medical degree graduates to advance basic science knowledge and to conduct both clinical and laboratory based research. We also accept graduates of life science disciplines to undertake research related to eye diseases and develop a career in medical sciences.

Students can select research programmes from a wide spectrum of eye diseases in Corneal and External Eye Diseases, Cataracts and Refractive Errors, Glaucoma, Vitreoretinal Diseases, as well as Orbital, Thyroid, Neurologic, Genetic and Children Eye Diseases. Students are accessible to all equipment and facilities in our research clinic and laboratories in ophthalmic imaging, microscopy, electrophysiology, molecular genomics, gene functions, cell and tissue culture, stem cells, experimental animals, and analytical biochemistry.

Currently, we have 20 MPhil and PhD students in our department. Most of them are recipients of post-graduate studentships from CUHK.

General Admissions Requirements

Our Department is committed to research of eye diseases at the highest standard and offers unique opportunities in the study of eye diseases using state-of-the-art technologies.

Our basic research involved studies on the etiology, molecular genetics, histopathology, biochemistry, and therapeutic responses of various eye diseases. In 1999 we established a comprehensive research laboratory system with modern facilities.
