Clinical Services

The Neonatal Unit at the Prince of Wales Hospital is the only tertiary neonatal unit serving the New Territories East Region with a population of > 1 million and an annual delivery rate of ~6,000 babies.


Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

The NICU consists of 22 beds and provides level III neonatal intensive care to critically ill infants. We are equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, e.g.,

  • Advanced ventilatory support – high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV), neurally-adjusted ventilatory assist (NAVA), and various modes of invasive and non-invasive ventilation

  • Inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) therapy – treatment of patients with pulmonary hypertension and cor pulmonale

  • Therapeutic hypothermia – treatment of newborns with moderate to severe hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE)

  • Perinatal care together with obstetricians for high risk pregnancies

  • Perioperative care for newborns requiring surgical intervention


Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU)

The SCBU consists of 60 level II special baby care beds providing care for:

  • Premature babies born greater than 32 weeks gestation

  • Newborn infants with medical or surgical problems but not requiring ventilatory support

  • Newborn infants recovering from serious conditions (step-down or intermediate care)


Follow-up clinics

  • Following children requiring long-term management after discharge, e.g., children with bronchopulmonary dysplasia, possible neurodisabilities, or complex medical conditions

  • Neurodevelopmental assessments

Educational activities

  • House officer training

  • Paediatric specialist training: neonatology for the purposes of general paediatrics

  • Regular dedicated neonatal unit audit meetings (monthly), guideline development meetings (twice monthly), quality management meetings (monthly)
