Clinical Services
The Division of Haematology/Oncology was set up by Prof. Patrick Yuen in 1980s after the opening of Prince of Wales Hospital. The first paediatric bone marrow transplantation in Hong Kong was performed in February 1991. The Lady Pao Children’s Cancer Centre was formally opened in 1995. In 2019, with integration of paediatric oncology service in Hong Kong, the paediatric Haematology/Oncology team of CUHK was translocated to Hong Kong Children’s Hospital (HKCH). In collaboration with paediatric teams from other hospitals in Hong Kong, the team continues to provide specialised clinical services to paediatric patients with cancers including haematological malignancies, solid tumors, and brain tumours and with haematological diseases in HKCH. The Haematology/Oncology unit in HKCH is equipped with 24 in-patient beds for patients with leukaemia / lymphoma and severe haematological diseases, 26 in-patient beds for patients with solid tumour and neuro-oncology tumors, and 12 in-patient beds for haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The unit receives referrals of patients age less than or equal to 18 with haematological or oncological problems across the territory. At the same time, the team continues to provide service to children with haematological diseases and long-term survivors of childhood cancer in Li Ka Shing Specialist Outpatient Clinic in Prince of Wales Hospital.
Educational activities
The team, as part of the Haematology/Oncology team in HKCH, provides paediatric oncology training for medical, nursing and technology staffs.
