Dr. LUK Che Chung (MBChB 1986) is the awardee in Global Achievement 2020 of the CUHK Distinguished Medical Alumni Award
As a hospital administrator for some 30 years, shuffling papers and answering emails are not how Dr. LUK Che Chung would handle his job. He believes that to effectively run a hospital, even the smallest bit of input from even the lowest level of employee would make a marked difference in enhancing quality care for patients. That is why it is not unusual to see him turn up, announced, in wards, canteen or common areas to talk to staff and colleagues.
Dr. LUK has the distinction of being one of the 46 medical students who graduated in 1986 from the then newly established Medical School of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He went through the growing pains of the Faculty, such as studying in cargo containers, travelling from one hospital to another and just making do with what was available at the time.
It was during the pre-medical heydays that he learned about team building, leadership and taking chances. After working as a clinical physician for four years, he decided to take a path that was “less travelled” by doctors - he ventured into administration. He felt that he could make a real difference to patients this way too.

His bold career move turned out exceptionally well - he is now the Cluster Chief Executive of Hong Kong East and Hospital Chief Executive of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, Wong Chuk Hang Hospital and St. John Hospital. Prior to that, he was the CCE of Hong Kong West and HCE of Queen Mary Hospital and Tsan Yuk Hospital and before that, the CE of the Kowloon East Cluster.
You would think that heading so many hospitals with thousands of employees would have taken a toll on him. Not so. He dives headlong into whatever job is at hand with the same fortitude and integrity as he has always done. His uncanny knack for balancing budgets, overseeing major building projects and managing crises has earned him kudos. Currently, he is leading his hospitals to contain the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Being one of the “unsung medical heroes” during the SARS crisis of 2003, he has accumulated enough experience to confront pandemics.
Dr. LUK is also involved in various community work and has lent his voice to organisations like the Medical Council and the HK Council of Social Service. But it is his track record as a hospital administrator that stands him in good stead on the leadership platform.
