Abstract

The most common cause of chronic kidney disease in Hong Kong, diabetes contributes to half of the city’s new cases of renal failure every year. After conducting an extensive study of diabetes sufferers, researchers from CUHK forecast that 1 in 6 diabetes patients are likely to experience a rapid deterioration of their renal function.

The team identified five genetic markers which may help identify patients likely to suffer from a rapid decline of their renal function. Early identification of these DKD patients can help ensure they receive timely treatment to slow down the rate of kidney damage.

The findings were published in the medical journal Kidney International.
