Biography

Prof. Ng graduated from the University of Hong Kong in 1995. He specializes in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery and liver transplantation. He was trained and worked in the Department of Surgery, The University of Hong Kong since 1996, and in The University of Hong Kong - Shenzhen Hospital in 2018. In 2019, Prof. Ng was appointed as Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Prof. Ng is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the American College of Surgeons and the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong. He is also a member of several international professional organizations, including the International Society of Digestive Surgery and International Hepato-Pancreato Biliary Association. Internationally, he is the treasurer of International Society of Digestive Surgery Asia-Pacific (ISDS AP) and Asia-Pacific Digestive Week Federation (APDWF).

Prof. Ng's main research interests focus on the field of management of liver cancer and liver transplantation. His clinical researches in liver cancer range from surgical management for early cancer to local ablation therapy for advanced disease. He was awarded the postgraduate degree of Doctor of Philosophy on the study of local ablation therapy in animal models and the degree of Master of Surgery on the study of clinical applications of radiofrequency ablation for liver cancer. In 2002, Prof. Ng pioneered the application of radiofrequency ablation in the management of early liver cancer and he led a single-center randomized trial of hepatic resection versus radiofrequency ablation for early hepatocellular carcinoma, which was completed in 2007 with significant clinical results. The long-term follow-up results of this trial was published in British Journal of Surgery in 2018. Prof. Ng is one of the few transplant surgeons in Hong Kong, who can independently perform various types of liver transplant, including adult-to-adult living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) using right liver graft with middle hepatic vein or left liver graft using middle hepatic vein, adult-to-pediatric living donor liver transplantation, deceased donor liver transplantation (DDLT) and split-liver liver transplantation. His personal series of LDLT and DDLT is over 800 and 200, respectively. In 2009, he pioneered the issue of MELD exception policy for patient with T2 hepatocellular carcinoma in Hong Kong and he was involved in the first donor-exchange living donor liver transplantation in Hong Kong.

Prof. Ng is the author of over 95 peer-reviewed articles in international journals, including Annals of Surgery, British Journal of Surgery, Radiology and Hepatology. He is the editorial broad member of international journals, including The Surgeon and Medicine(R). He has delivered invited talks in various international conferences based on his renowned research works. Based on his academic achievements, he has received distinguished awards, including Gold Medal for Best Original Research, John Wong Young Surgeon's Award, Young Investigator Award, the G.B. Ong Travelling Fellowship, International Guest Scholarship and Carlos A. Pellegrini's Travelling Fellowship by American College of Surgeons.
