FACULTY

Shannon Chan is currently an Assistant Professor in the Division of Upper Gastrointestinal & Metabolic Surgery of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2007. She completed general surgical training and received fellowships of the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong and Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2014. Dr. Chan’s interest is in gastric and esophageal cancers, mainly focusing in the laparoscopic and robotic approach. She did her overseas training in National Cancer Centre in Tokyo, Yonsei University in Seoul and also Amsterdam Medical Centre in Amsterdam. Her research interests include upper gastrointestinal surgical oncology and advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy especially in interventional endoscopic ultrasound. She also has special interests in peritoneal surface malignancy and has started a multidisciplinary team for these rare, yet important group of patients. She is a member of the stomach and duodenal diseases subcommittee of the World Endoscopy Organisation (WEO) and is a reviewer for Digestive Endoscopy and Surgical Endoscopy. She has published over 20 peer-reviewed journals.

Apart from her research interest, Dr. Chan has also devoted herself to humanitarian aid work. In 2014, she joined the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF, also named Doctors without borders). MSF is an international humanitarian non-governmental organization working in war-torn and under-developed regions. Dr. Chan joined their surgical missions to South Sudan from Oct 2016 - Dec 2016 and to Yemen from Dec 2019 to Feb 2020. After her return, she has further affirmed her commitment to providing humanitarian aid to the less developed parts of the world.

Yawen Chan obtained her Bachelor and Master degrees in Engineering in University of Waterloo, Canada, and The Chinese University of Hong Kong respectively, specializing in Biomedical Engineering. She then worked as a Research Associate in the area of functional gastrointestinal disorder (FGI) for 8 years, specializing in various FGI investigations (such as esophageal manometry and rectal barostat) and mental health issues in FGI patients with the university. Recently, after finishing her Master degree in Clinical Psychology in The Chinese University of Hong Kong, she joined the Institute of Integrative Medicine in 2016 and continued to pursue her career in promoting mental well-being to FGI patients.

Professor Stephen Lam Chan is currently the clinical Associate Professor at the Department of Clinical Oncology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Professor Chan is the associate editor of Asia-Pacific journal of Clinical Oncology and serving the editorial board of Liver International. He is the key investigator in multiple international clinical trials on novel drugs for liver cancers. He is currently international member of the NCI Hepatobiliary Task Force of the Gastrointestinal Steering Committee in United States. Since 2016, he has also been the Chairman of Hand-in-hand Cancer Foundation, which is a charity serving the cancer patients in the community. He published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers in international journals including the Journal of Clinical Oncology and the Lancet.

Professor Paul Chan is Clinical Professor and Chairman of the Department of Microbiology, and Deputy Director of the Stanley Ho Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases, Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is also an Honorary Consultant in Microbiology for the New Territories East Cluster Hospitals of the Hong Kong Hospital Authority. Professor Chan is a renowned clinical virologist with special interest in tumour virology and human respiratory viruses. He serves many key professional bodies in Hong Kong, including the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Zoonotic Diseases of the Centre for Health Protection, the Grant Review Board for Medical and Health Research Fund. Professor Chan is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Virological Methods. He has published 14 book chapters and more than 330 scientific papers, and attained an H-index of 51.

Dr Charing Chong obtained her Bachelor of Medicine from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2003. She underwent surgical training in Hong Kong and obtained her FRCSEd (Gen) in 2010. She also obtained a Master in Epidemiology and Biostatistics in 2009. Dr Chong is the principal or co-investigator for a variety of clinical and preclinical studies examining new approaches for the treatment of liver and pancreatic cancer and endoscopic ultrasound. She serves as subcommittee of standardization of teaching material in the Asian EUS group and also a member of various profession societies including Hong Kong Society of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, Hong Kong Society of Minimal Access Surgery, Hong Kong Society of Robotic Surgery and Hong Kong Society of Digestive Endoscopy. She is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor at Prince of Wales Hospital, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her research interests include Multidisciplinary treatment for hepatobiliary and pancreatic cancer, hepatitis-B virus related hepatocellular carcinoma, minimally invasive and robotic surgery for hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases, advanced endoscopic endosonography and Pancreatic cystic disease.

Professor Hong FUNG is Professor of Practice in Health Services Management at the Jockey Club School of Public Health & Primary Care, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).

He is also the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the CUHK Medical Centre.

Before he joined CUHK in 2014, Professor FUNG was Cluster Chief Executive of the New Territories East Cluster and Hospital Chief Executive of the Prince of Wales Hospital at the Hospital Authority (HA) from 2002 to 2013, overseeing the management and operations of 7 public hospitals.

Prior to that, he worked in the HA Head Office and was responsible for the planning and development of the public hospital services and facilities for over a decade. He spearheaded the development of HA’s Clinical Management System and electronic patient records.

Professor FUNG was President (2014-2018) and Chief Censor (2010-2013) of the Hong Kong College of Community Medicine. Professor FUNG is well recognized for his expertise in medical leadership, health planning, health informatics, and health services management.

Professor FUNG teaches health services planning, healthcare innovation and technology management, healthcare financing, communications and marketing, and decision making at the School.

Dr Alex Yui Hui graduated from the University of Cambridge and received basic physician training in teaching hospitals in England. In 1998, he returned to Hong Kong and joined the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics in Prince of Wales Hospital to receive specialist training. He became a fellow of the Hong Kong College of Physicians and Hong Kong Academy of Medicine in 2002. In the same year, he was awarded the Silver Medal for best dissertation by the Hong Kong College of Physicians. He is currently a private practitioner in Gastroenterology and Hepatology and a Clinical Associate Professor (Honorary) in the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics of the CUHK.

Before entering private practice, Dr Hui took part in many research projects and drug trials whilst working in Prince of Wales Hospital. His main areas of research included peptic ulcer disease, colon cancer, liver fibrosis, complications of cirrhosis, natural history and treatment of chronic hepatitis B and C. He was a reviewer of scientific journals including Liver International, Journal of Hepatology and Laboratory Investigation and has published 70 articles in international peer-reviewed journals and two book chapters. Dr Hui is currently the Honorary Secretary of Asiahep Hong Kong, a council member of the British Medical Association (Hong Kong) and a committee member of the Health and Education Committee of the Hong Kong Liver Foundation.

Dr Lee has particular focus on promotion of child and adolescent health through school settings linking to community and primary health care. He has contributed models of care for school health, applicable internationally.” This was citation for election as member of National Academy of Medicine (NAM) USA in 2012 and the first elected from Hong Kong. He has served NAM Forum on ‘Investing in Children globally’(iYCG) and co-chair HK iYCG workshop in 2015. He is Vice President of UNESCO-HK. He has served as WHO Advisor/Consultant since 2003.

Albert obtained Medical Degree from University of London, higher doctorate degree in Medicine (MD) from CUHK, and higher professional qualifications in Family Medicine and Public Health. He also obtained Law Degree from University of London and Master of Law with distinction (Arbitration and DR) from City University of Hong Kong, and Fellow of Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He is Professor (Clinical) in Public Health and Primary Care and the Founding Director of Centre for Health Education and Health Promotion. Professor Grace Lui’s main research interest is in the understanding of epidemiology, pathogenesis and treatment of co-morbidities in people living with HIV infection. She has conducted research exploring subclinical atherosclerosis, fatty liver disease and liver fibrosis, kidney tubular dysfunction, and diabetes and insulin resistance in HIV-infected patients.

Professor Lui also did work on new diagnostic tools to aid early diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary and extra-pulmonary tuberculosis in hospitalized patients. The research team is also involved in research to evaluate strategies in optimizing antimicrobial use.

Prof Lai received education at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and joined the Department of Surgery in 1990. His received surgical training in general surgery and specialized in hepato-biliary and pancreatic surgery in Hong Kong and Edinburgh. Apart from being an active practicing surgeon, teacher for medical students and trainer for surgical trainees, Prof. Lai is actively involved in both clinical and basic scientific research. He is also the editor-in-chief of the journal "Surgical Practice" and a member of editorial boards of a number of local and international academic journals.

Prof Lai has an keen interest in surgical outcome research, quality and risk management, healthcare policy, medico-legal and mediation. He has studied for a master degree in medical law at the University of Northumbria and he is an accredited mediator in Hong Kong under the Hong Kong Mediation Accreditation Association Limited (HKMAAL). He has contributed to training and education of healthcare professionals in various areas and is an experience examiner in the Faculty and College of Surgeons.

In the field of hospital administration, Prof Lai has been the Honorary Chief of Service at the Department of Surgery at the Prince of Wales Hospital and the Cluster Coordinator for Surgical Services in New Territories East Cluster from 2008 to 2018. He was elected as a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators in 2017 and a fellow of the Hong Kong College of Community Medicine (Medical Administration) in 2018. Recently, he has been appointed as the Medical Director, Quality & Safety at the Chinese University of Hong Kong Medical Centre.

Prof Terence Lao MBBS, MD, FRCOG, FHKAM, FHKCOG, Certificate in Maternal-Fetal Medicine, joined the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, CUHK, Hong Kong in 2008. His last appointment was Professor and Director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, at the University of Hong Kong. He has undergone formal fellowship training in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of Toronto, Canada, as well as training in Obstetric Medicine, Queen Charlotte’s Maternity Hospital, London, UK. His major interest is in medical complications in pregnancy and perinatology, and has published more than 240 papers in peer-reviewed international journals. His research interests include endocrine complications in pregnancy, especially gestational diabetes and thyroid problems, cardiac conditions, and liver diseases especially hepatitis B virus infection.

Dr Lee Wai Hung Danny graduated at The Chinese University of Hong Kong with distinctions in Paediatrics and Surgery in 1991. He received postgraduate surgical training at Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong and Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, USA. Dr Lee had researched and published widely in the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy and minimal invasive surgery. He was awarded twice the best research paper by the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong in 2000 and 2002. Dr Lee obtained his doctorate degree in Medicine in 2005. Currently, Dr Lee is a private Specialist in Surgery and the Director of Endoscopy Services, Evangel Hospital.

Dr Lee also studied laws in his leisure time. He had obtained three post-graduate law degrees altogether. In the field of medico-legal and ethics, Dr Lee has developed particular research interests in medical negligence, conflicts management and alternative dispute resolution. He was awarded distinction in the Master’s Degree in Arbitration and Dispute Resolution (HKU). Apart from clinical works, Dr Lee is an accredited general mediator (HKMAAL and HKIAC) and a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, UK.

Dr. Lee graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1990. He started his specialty training in Endoscopy, Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Prince of Wales Hospital. He became Fellow of the Academy of Medicine of Hong Kong in 1998 and Fellow of the Royal Collage of Physicians of Edinburgh and London in 2005 and 2010. Dr. Lee had been working as the director of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Centre, and director of the Endoscopy and Endosonography Centre of the Baptist Hospital. He is also the founding president of the Hong Kong Society of Endosonography.

Dr. Lee’s interests focus mainly on advanced endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). He is one of the few endoscopists being trained in EUS in Hong Kong since 1996. He obtained his Doctorate in Medicine based on his work on EUS on portal hypertension in 2001. In 2007, Dr. Lee, together with the research team in the CUHK, had been awarded State Scientific and Technological Progress Award for their excellent researches in the topic of “Non-surgical treatments of peptic ulcer bleeding”. Dr. Lee had been invited to give lectures and demonstrations in various EUS and endoscopy workshops and symposiums locally and internationally. Dr. Lee has published 7 book chapters, authored and co-authored 61 journal articles.

Prof Philip Kam-Tao Li is the Chief of Nephrology & Consultant Physician of the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics at the Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH), Hong Kong. He is also the Honorary Professor of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is the President of the Hong Kong College of Physicians. He is the Chairman of the Central Renal Committee of Hospital Authority of Hong Kong.

Prof Li is dedicating his efforts to promote nephrology both locally and internationally. Prof Li is the President of Asian Pacific Society of Nephrology. He served as the President of International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (2014-2016). He is also the President of the International Association of Chinese Nephrologists (IACN). He is the Co-Chair of International Steering Committee for World Kidney Day. He also serves as the Executive Committee Member of the Asian Forum for CKD Initiatives. He is the Past Chairman of the Hong Kong Society of Nephrology and Past President of the Hong Kong Transplantation Society respectively and has served in the Council and the Executive Committee of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) from 2005-2011. He served the Board of Directors for Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcome (KDIGO) from 2006-2015.

Prof. Li has been the Presidents of the Organizing Committees for the ISN 2004 Conference on Prevention of Progression of Kidney Diseases and the 11th International Congress of International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis, 2006 respectively. He was the Scientific Vice President and Program Chair, 2nd Congress of International Society for Hemodialysis, 2009. Prof. Li was the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee and Scientific Co-chair for the World Congress of Nephrology 2013. He was the President of the Organizing Committee for the 1st International Congress of Chinese Nephrologists 2015.

Prof Li has been Visiting Professor to Nanjing University, Fudan University and Peking University, China, Nagoya University, Japan and Brown University, USA.

Prof. Li is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Hong Kong Journal of Nephrology, Regional Advisor of Nephrology Dialysis & Transplantation and Editor of the International Journal of Artificial Organs. He is on the Editorial Boards of Kidney International, Clinical Nephrology, Peritoneal Dialysis International, Chinese Journal of Nephrology, Dialysis & Transplantation, Medical Progress and Indian Journal of Peritoneal Dialysis and Advisory Board of Nature Reviews Nephrology and Chinese Nephrology Research Electronic Journal. He is a regular reviewer for all the major Nephrology Journals.

He has published over 500 original and review articles in peer-reviewed journals, 4 books and 20 book chapters. He has given lectures to over 170 international congresses and meetings.

His research interests include Peritoneal dialysis (Residual Renal Function, Cardiovascular Disease, Connectology, Peritonitis, Biocompatible solutions Adequacy), Cardiovascular mortality in dialysis patients, IgA nephropathy, Prevention of Progression of Chronic Kidney Disease, Urinary biomarkers, Diabetes in renal failure and Immunogenetics of Nephropathies, Drug Pharmacokinetics and Complications after transplantation.

In recognition of Professor Li’s contribution to nephrology, he has won several awards including: Sir David Todd Award of the Hong Kong College of Physicians, Richard Yu Endowment Award of the Hong Kong Society of Nephrology, the Chief Executive’s Commendation for Community Service, HKSAR and the International Distinguished Medal 2012 of the National Kidney Foundation, USA.

After graduating from the medical school of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Dr LIN furthered his cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) training at the Beck Institute in Philadelphia. He also received his postgraduate training in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. After that, he continued to broaden his exposure and training in different types of psychological interventions namely Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) & hypnotherapy etc. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2014. His interests include happiness, positive psychology, mindfulness and treatment of depression.

Dr LIN is the author of “The Happy Handbook on Fighting Against Depression -- 2nd Edition” (開心抗抑鬱手冊 <第二版> --明窗出版社). He also enjoys writing articles and has a Facebook blog ( 快樂健心室by 快樂大夫）for promoting happiness and happy living.

Ms Grace Lui is a Registered Dietitian with the College of Dietitians of British Columbia and is currently working as a clinical dietitian at the Hospital Authority, Hong Kong. She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Dietetics and Nutritional Sciences at McGill University and underwent professional training at the Montreal General Hospital, Royal Victoria Hospital and Jewish Eldercare Centre in Canada before returning to Hong Kong. She then furthered her studies and obtained her Masters in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Her clinical interest and scope of practice includes gastroenterology, surgical and critical care nutrition and has published research on the use of Indirect Calorimetry for nutritional assessment in critically ill patients. She was a member of the Nutrition Support Team at the North District Hospital- working alongside a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, pharmacists and specialist nurses to provide intensive nutrition support therapy for pre- and postoperative patients.

Professor Ronald Ching Wan Ma is Professor at the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Honorary Consultant endocrinologist at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong. He is the Immediate Past President of Diabetes Hongkong, a charitable voluntary organization dedicated to promote social awareness of diabetes and serve diabetic patients, and is currently the Vice-President of the Hong Kong Society of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Reproduction, and member of the Executive Board, the Asian Association for the Study of Diabetes. He is currently also serving as the President of the International Diabetes Epidemiology Group.

Professor Ma completed his medical training at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, and trained in Internal Medicine in London. He subsequently moved to Hong Kong, where he completed his endocrinology fellowship training. Following his endocrine fellowship training, he furthered his research interest in diabetes and diabetic complications at the Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical School.

His main research interests include the epidemiology of Diabetes in Asia, genetics of diabetes and its complications, gestational diabetes and its long-term effects. His group has conducted detailed studies to follow the metabolic outcome of children born to mothers with gestational diabetes. Dr Ma has published over 180 research articles in international peer-reviewed journals and authored 10 book chapters.

Professor Ma has received several awards including the Young Investigator Award from the Hong Kong College of Physicians (2008), the Young Investigator Award from the International Diabetes Epidemiology Group (2009), Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award, Hong Kong (2009), the Albert Renold Fellowship from the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (2010), and the Research Excellence Award from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (2011).

Dr Joyce WY Mak is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics. She completed her undergraduate training in Medicine in the University of Hong Kong. She is very passionate about inflammatory bowel disease and she further pursuit training in IBD in St Mark’s Hospital, London and University of Chicago. After joining CUHK, she has been working on various projects in IBD. She is primarily interested in clinical research in IBD and gut microbiota and its relationship with IBD.

Professor Joseph Sung is an Emeritus Professor of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He was the Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong from 2010 to 2017. Professor Joseph J.Y. Sung received his medical degree (MB BS) from The University of Hong Kong in 1983 and was conferred PhD in biomedical sciences by the University of Calgary in 1992 and MD by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 1997. As a renowned scientist in gastroenterology, Professor Sung’s research interests include intestinal bleeding, Helicobacter Pylori, peptic ulcer, hepatitis B, colorectal cancer, and other cancers related to the digestive system. Professor Sung and his team proved the relationship between H. Pylori and peptic ulcer diseases. They were first in demonstrating that a course of antibiotics lasting a week can cure H. Pylori infection and successfully treat peptic ulcers and minimize their relapse. At the same time, he and his research team pioneered the use of endoscopic treatment for ulcer bleeding to reduce the need for operative surgery. These research results have a major impact on and have changed the practice of gastroenterology worldwide. Professor Sung is a renowned researcher in gastroenterology and hepatology. He led a group of experts from 15 Asia-Pacific countries to launch colorectal cancer screening research in 2004, and has laid down clear guidelines and promoted colorectal screenings in the region. Professor Sung was honoured by the Prevent Cancer Foundation of the United States with the Laurel Award in 2008. In 2009, his seminal lectures on peptic ulcer bleeding won him the Marshall and Warren Lecture Award. In the same year, he was also awarded the Endoscopy Award of the German Society of Gastroenterology. Dr CC Szeto is currently a Professor of Department of Medicine & Therapeutics, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a Honorary Consultant Physician of Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong Hospital Authority. His research interests include peritoneal dialysis related infections, vascular disease of renal failure, circulating bacterial fragment, urinary biomarkers, and glomerulonephritis.

Dr Tang received his M.D. degree from University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine in 2004 and was selected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed his internal medicine residency at University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center in 2007. He completed his gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship at University of California, San Diego Medical Center and achieved certification in gastroenterology from the American Board of Internal Medicine in 2010. Dr Tang subsequently pursued training in advanced endoscopy with focus on EUS, ERCP and balloon-assisted enteroscopy at University of California, San Diego Medical Center in 2010 - 2011.

His clinical and research interests include EUS, ERCP, pancreatic cystic neoplasms, GI cancers, and GI bleeding. He has published papers and written book chapters on topics of EUS, pancreatic cystic neoplasms, and GI bleeding.

Dr Tang is currently a clinical professional consultant at the Institute of Digestive Disease, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, associate director of the S.H. Ho Center for Digestive Health, and deputy director of endoscopy center at the Prince of Wales Hospital.

Anthony Teoh is currently the Deputy Director of Endoscopy and Associate Professor in The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2001. Since then, he has completed his surgical training in the Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong and he was awarded with the GB Ong and Li Shield’s Medal for the best candidate in the fellowship examinations both locally and internationally. He then completed his overseas training in the Kitasato University East Hospital and the Cancer Institute Hospital (Ariake) focusing on advanced interventional endoscopy and minimally invasive surgery for upper gastrointestinal cancers. His research interests are multifold and these include advanced interventional endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERCP), minimally invasive surgery, single site access surgery and robotics surgery. He currently serves as a Visiting Professor to the Fujian University Medical Hospital, Consultant for Hepatopancreatobiliary Minimally Invasive Surgery Institute of Central South University, steering committee member for the Asian EUS group, member of upper GI committee of the World Endoscopy Organization, founding member of the Hong Kong EUS society and council member of Hong Kong Hernia society. He is also on the editorial board for several internationally renowned journals including Clinical gastroenterology and hepatology, VideoGIE, World journal of Gastrointestinal endoscopy and World Journal of Gastroenterology. He has published almost 80 journal papers and written 7 book chapters.

The theme of Yun Kit’s research revolves around understanding the composition of microbial communities and factors that influence their assembly in environmental and host-associated systems. He initially began working in plant and soil environments, describing relationships between agricultural management, plant species and the types of soil microorganisms recruited into plant roots. After joining CUHK, he now studies human-associated microorganisms with a focus on the gut microbiome. He primarily uses DNA sequencing and comparative genome analyses to identify microorganisms and examine their functional potential, with the goal to deliver a better understanding of both health- and disease-associated microorganisms relevant to the local population.

Mr Tse received his Master of Philosophy degree in Statistics from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 2000. After graduation, he had worked as a statistical consultant and teaching staff in the JC School of Public Health and Primary Care, CUHK for eight years. He has been a biostatistician in the Department of Medicine & Therapeutics, Institute of Digestive Disease (IDD) since 2009 till now. He is the Co-Investigator of multiple research grants including the Hong Kong RGC-GRF, and HMRF projects. He has published over 35 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He is currently a member of the Editorial Board for 2 medical journals.

Dr Sunny H. Wong is an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics. He completed his undergraduate medical training in The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He received his doctorate degree at the University of Oxford, and has work on human genetic susceptibility to common infectious diseases. After joining the CUHK, he has been working on the gut microbiota in various digestive diseases. He is primarily interested in understanding the host-microbe relationships, and to develop biomarkers for various digestive diseases including colorectal neoplasia, inflammatory bowel disease and gastrointestinal infections.

Dr Martin Wong graduated in the Faculty of Medicine, CUHK in 1999 and started his training in Family Medicine since as soon as he joined the Hospital Authority. He obtained his fellowships of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and Hong Kong College of Family Physicians (HKCFP) by examination and holds three master degrees in the fields of public health, human resource management and business administration. He obtained his Doctorate of Medicine degree through his studies on pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacological profiles of antihypertensive therapies in primary practice. He was conferred the Honorary Fellow of The Hong Kong Academy of Nursing in 2016.

John Wong graduated from medical school at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1992. He continued his post-graduate training in basic science with the Gastrointestinal Research Group, University of Calgary, Canada where he received his MSc degree. His relevant research work was in the role of adhesion molecules in chronic liver allograft rejection. Dr Wong returned to Hong Kong in 1997 and continued his surgical training at the Prince of Wales Hospital. He had his overseas training on laparoscopic ultrasonography in Odense University Hospital, Denmark in 2002, where he worked under Professor H.O. Nielsen. Dr Wong obtained the fellowships from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and College of Surgeons of Hong Kong in 2004. His current position is a consultant of the Division of HPB Surgery at the Prince of Wales Hospital and Clinical Associate Professor (honorary) in CUHK. He has published over 85 articles in international peer-reviewed journals. His special interest is in the management of hepatocellular carcinoma. Apart from clinical and academic activities, Dr Wong has been appointed as the coordinator of the Quality & Risk Management Team, member of the NTEC New Technology Advisory Committee, department coordinator and criteria subject officer for Hospital Accreditation.

Grace Wong is a Professor in the department of Medicine and Therapeutics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2001 with honors and distinctions in medicine. After graduation, she received training at the division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong, China. In 2008, she completed her training and was awarded Fellow of the Hong Kong College of Physicians. In 2010, she obtained her doctoral degree of medicine from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Dr. Wong’s main research interests include non-invasive assessment of liver fibrosis, chronic viral hepatitis, and risk prediction for hepatocellular carcinoma. She has published over 210 articles in peer-reviewed journals including Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Gut. She is currently Editor-in-Chief of Hepatology (Hong Kong edition), Associate Editor of Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, an editorial board member of 12 journals, and a reviewer of 66 biomedical journals. She has been awarded the Young Investigator Award of the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver in 2009, the Distinguished Research Paper Award for Young Investigators of the Hong Kong College of Physicians in 2010, 2013, 2014, and 2015, the Ten Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) of Hong Kong in 2014, the Sir David Todd Lectureship of the Hong Kong College of Physicians in 2016, and Emerging Leader Lectureship of the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Foundation (JGHF) at APDW 2017.

Alexander Chiu is Medical Director of AXA Hong Kong, taking the lead for Payer to Partner strategy, overseeing clinical governance of health services, implementing best practices and cost-effective healthcare as well as designing and delivering population health management programmes. Prior to joining AXA Hong Kong, Alex was Chief Operating Officer in Gleneagles Hong Kong Hospital, who led the clinical operations and business development. Alex’s career in healthcare spans across public and private sectors. He has practised as a physician for 17 years before embarking on a career in health administration. Previous roles include being Service Director for Quality and Safety at Queen Mary Hospital, Chief Manager for the Department of Quality and Standards at Hospital Authority Head Office, Chief Manager for the Department of Integrated Care Program at Hospital Authority Head Office, and Executive Medical Director of Quality Healthcare Medical Services Limited. Alex holds a medical degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and was a critical care physician by training. He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom and a fellow of the Hong Kong College of Physicians, the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.

Vincent Wong is a professor at the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He graduated from the same university and received training under Professors Joseph Sung, Francis Chan and Henry Chan. His research focuses on viral hepatitis and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. He has authored over 300 articles in international medical journals. His team pioneered the use of non-invasive tests of liver fat and fibrosis to study the epidemiology of non- alcoholic fatty liver disease. His papers have been cited by various guidelines, and his latest h-index is 56. He is an associate editor of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology and served as the president of the Hong Kong Association for the Study of Liver Diseases from 2015 to 2017. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, the Hong Kong College of Physicians and the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine.

Professor Justin Wu is the Chief Operating Officer of CUHK Medical Centre and the former Associate Dean (Development), Faculty of Medicine, CUHK. He is specialized in functional gastrointestinal disorders, gastroesophageal reflux disease and GI motility with over 200 publications in top journals including NEJM, Lancet and Gastroenterology.

Professor Wu served as the President of Hong Kong Society of Gastroenterology, Secretary General of Asian Pacific Association of Gastroenterology (APAGE) and Asian Neurogastroenterology and Motility Association (ANMA), and the President of Asia Pacific Digestive Week (APDW) 2017 in Hong Kong. He has served as an associate editor for the Neurogastroenterology & Motility, American Journal of Gastroenterology, and Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Professor Winnie Yeo graduated from King’s College Hospital, University of London. She underwent postgraduate training in Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, and at King’s College, Westminster and Royal Marsden Hospitals in London before returning to Hong Kong. Professor Yeo has been the Chairman of the Medical Oncology Specialty of the Hong Kong College of Physicians between 2007 and 2013. She is currently a clinical professor of the Department of Clinical Oncology, Faculty of Medicine, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Professor Yeo has been the Past Chairman of the Medical Oncology Specialty of the Hong Kong College of Physicians. She serves as a member and advisor in various expert panels and committees within the University, the Hong Kong Hospital Authority and various health advisory panels. She has authored and co-authored over 200 papers and her main research interests are management of breast, liver and gastric cancer patients as well as hepatitis B virus-related complications in cancer patients.

Professor Yeoh is Professor of Public Health and Director of the Centre for Health Systems and Policy Research. He was Director of the School from 2014-2020. His research is in health systems, services and policy with an interest in applying systems thinking in studying how the complex components of health systems interact and interrelate to improve health. He has a vast experience and knowledge in health systems research and in social and elderly services. Prof Yeoh is currently the Principle Investigator of 2 commissioned studies (i) to investigate Hong Kong’s early detection, assessment and response system to COVID-19, and (ii) to evaluate a new primary care initiative – an innovative district health system in Hong Kong. He also completed a study to evaluate the impact of a government elderly healthcare voucher schemes on healthcare utilization, and a study to review, develop and pilot integrated health service models for an ageing population. He has been commissioned by the Social Welfare Department to evaluate two pilot projects on (a) Residential Care Service Voucher for the Elderly and (b) Support for Elderly Persons Discharged from Public Hospitals after Treatment with an aim to enhance the residential care and transitional care services for the elderly. He has just completed a commissioned study by the Macao Health Bureau to assess their population healthcare needs so as to inform the planning of services and resources necessary to meet the changing health needs of Macao population. In addition, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has funded him to conduct a research to promote intergenerational cohesion and population health through launching theoretical-and-evidence-based intergenerational programs with the collaboration of NGOS in the community. He is a member of the Research Council of Our Hong Kong Foundation and led 2 health policy research projects for the Foundation, namely An Investment for the Celebration of Aging, and Fit for Purpose: A Health System for the 21st Century.

Internationally, he is involved in collaborative work with research networks such as the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN), the Association of Pacific Rim Universities and Asia Pacific Network for Health Systems Strengthening (ANHSS) in studies on health systems and training for policy. He also supports the work in health system of the Western Pacific Region of World Health Organization undertaking commissioned research and as Temporary Advisor to provide technical support for strengthening health systems. He has provided consultancy reports on governance and hospital planning.

Prior to joining The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Yeoh was Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region between 1999 and 2004. As Secretary, he established systems in health care delivery, financing and quality assurance for a vision of “a lifelong investment in health.” He modernised the capabilities of the health system to deal with potential outbreaks of infectious disease. In the Welfare portfolio, he instituted changes in funding providers and in the organisation of services which would improve outputs and outcomes.

From 1990 – 1999, Professor Yeoh was head & the first Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Hospital Authority with the responsibility of the management and transformation of the public hospital system. The greatest impact of Professor Yeoh's work as Chief Executive was in transforming the entire public system into one which embraced new values of being patient-centred, a focus on outcomes, an emphasis on quality and initiative in clinical governance. He was President of the International Hospital Federation from 2001 – 2003 and was awarded the Hospital Management Asia Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002.

As a clinician, he pioneered public health programmes in the prevention of Hepatitis B and HIV/AIDS. Professor Yeoh has held many key positions in professional bodies, both locally and internationally. He was awarded JP in 1993, OBE in 1997 by the Hong Kong Government and GBS in 2005 by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in recognition of his public service.
