Prof Philip Kam-Tao Li is the Chief of Nephrology & Consultant Physician of the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics at the Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH), Hong Kong. He is also the Honorary Professor of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is the President of the Hong Kong College of Physicians. He is the Chairman of the Central Renal Committee of Hospital Authority of Hong Kong.
Prof Li is dedicating his efforts to promote nephrology both locally and internationally. Prof Li is the President of Asian Pacific Society of Nephrology. He served as the President of International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (2014-2016). He is also the President of the International Association of Chinese Nephrologists (IACN). He is the Co-Chair of International Steering Committee for World Kidney Day. He also serves as the Executive Committee Member of the Asian Forum for CKD Initiatives. He is the Past Chairman of the Hong Kong Society of Nephrology and Past President of the Hong Kong Transplantation Society respectively and has served in the Council and the Executive Committee of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) from 2005-2011. He served the Board of Directors for Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcome (KDIGO) from 2006-2015.
Prof. Li has been the Presidents of the Organizing Committees for the ISN 2004 Conference on Prevention of Progression of Kidney Diseases and the 11th International Congress of International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis, 2006 respectively. He was the Scientific Vice President and Program Chair, 2nd Congress of International Society for Hemodialysis, 2009. Prof. Li was the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee and Scientific Co-chair for the World Congress of Nephrology 2013. He was the President of the Organizing Committee for the 1st International Congress of Chinese Nephrologists 2015.
Prof Li has been Visiting Professor to Nanjing University, Fudan University and Peking University, China, Nagoya University, Japan and Brown University, USA.
Prof. Li is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Hong Kong Journal of Nephrology, Regional Advisor of Nephrology Dialysis & Transplantation and Editor of the International Journal of Artificial Organs. He is on the Editorial Boards of Kidney International, Clinical Nephrology, Peritoneal Dialysis International, Chinese Journal of Nephrology, Dialysis & Transplantation, Medical Progress and Indian Journal of Peritoneal Dialysis and Advisory Board of Nature Reviews Nephrology and Chinese Nephrology Research Electronic Journal. He is a regular reviewer for all the major Nephrology Journals.
He has published over 500 original and review articles in peer-reviewed journals, 4 books and 20 book chapters. He has given lectures to over 170 international congresses and meetings.
His research interests include Peritoneal dialysis (Residual Renal Function, Cardiovascular Disease, Connectology, Peritonitis, Biocompatible solutions Adequacy), Cardiovascular mortality in dialysis patients, IgA nephropathy, Prevention of Progression of Chronic Kidney Disease, Urinary biomarkers, Diabetes in renal failure and Immunogenetics of Nephropathies, Drug Pharmacokinetics and Complications after transplantation.
In recognition of Professor Li’s contribution to nephrology, he has won several awards including: Sir David Todd Award of the Hong Kong College of Physicians, Richard Yu Endowment Award of the Hong Kong Society of Nephrology, the Chief Executive’s Commendation for Community Service, HKSAR and the International Distinguished Medal 2012 of the National Kidney Foundation, USA.
