遊戲研究是對遊戲、玩家以及玩遊戲過程中產生的文化相關現象的研究,及與之相關的文化的研究。這個主題是近幾年文化研究包涵中新興起的研究領域之一。研究遊戲可以有很多不同的層面,我們可以專注在跨類型的比較,也可以專門分析線上角色扮演、具競爭性質或戰略性的遊戲。遊戲研究的範疇廣泛,探討從主流商業遊戲,以學習為主的嚴肅性遊戲,乃至獨立、實驗及藝術的主題遊戲。遊戲研究令我們了解遊戲在社會及文化扮演的角色。研究主題可聚焦於其設計、敍事、音樂及角色的展現。我們也能從遊戲研究中暸解當今由電腦系統及語言所產生出來的視覺文化,比如《英雄聯盟》、《當個創世神》、《精靈寶可夢GO》、《太空戰士》等這些社交遊戲展現了具有科技特性的新興文化。
Game research is the study of game, the act of playing it and the players and cultures surrounding to them. It is a recently emerging sub-field in cultural studies. A study of game can be cross genres, studying online role-play, competitive, or strategy games. It can also cover a wide spectrum of titles that are mainstream commercial, serious, independent, experimental and artistic. Game studies allow one to understand the role that game plays in the society and culture. The topics can focus on design, narrative, music and character representation. One can also learn the technological features that computer system brings to enable social gaming in titles such as Leagues of Legend, Minecraft, Pokemon Go, and etc.
