A dental hygienist is a licensed dental professional, registered with a regulatory body. Once registered, hygienists are primary healthcare professionals who work alongside to dentists to provide full oral health care. They have the training and education that focus on the prevention and treatment of many oral disease. It is likely, then, that much of your interaction will be with a hygienist, especially if you are visiting the office for a routine cleaning.
