As the writing instruments evolved, inkstones inevitably faced the test of time. Their practical use declined and they became mainly an artistic pursuit for visual enjoyment. Inkstones have been gradually turned into mere artistic crafts. Nevertheless, there is still much room for the development of inkstone carving in contemporary time (after 1912) because different schools can learn from the traditional inkstones. Different types, materials and origins of stones can also be discovered for future development.
