College Graduate Named Rhodes Scholar
Miss Rachel Leung, a fresh graduate of the University’s Medicine Programme Global Physician-Leadership Stream affiliated to the College, has been named Rhodes Scholar 2021 from Hong Kong. She will receive a full scholarship to study postgraduate programme at the University of Oxford in the UK. Rachel is the 15th Rhodes Scholar and also the second medical student from the University since the scholarship was introduced to Hong Kong more than three decades ago.
Rachel graduated from Medicine Programme Global Physician-Leadership Stream last year. Apart from spending her time for academic pursuit, she is also keen to explore the world and care the community. In 2014, she participated in the College’s Cambodia service trip and studied at Brown University in USA through the College’s exchange programme in the 2014-15 academic year. In December 2018, Rachel travelled to Uganda in Africa, together with other medical students of the College, as well as lecturers and alumni from Sports Medicine and Health Science programme under the guidance of Prof. Patrick Yung, Assistant Dean (Alumni Affairs), Faculty of Medicine and College member. As a team, they provided training to sports coaches and enhanced their knowledge on injury prevention. Rachel is also an active sports lover playing the role of captain in the College’ swimming team, and member in both table tennis team and athletic team.
Established in 1902, the Rhodes Scholarship is internationally prestigious. Its recipients will be sponsored to study postgraduate programme at the University of Oxford in the UK. The selection criteria of the scholarship are highly strict. The applicants need to demonstrate outstanding scholastic attainments, character, leadership, care for others, courage, sports talents, etc. to meet the requirements.
Rachel will share with the students her time at S.H. Ho College in College Symposium to be held on 17 March, 2021.
