Ming
Duan Handheld Inkstone

Another popular style in the Ming Dynasty, apart from Shi Qu Yan (Stone Canal Inkstone), was handheld inkstones. This style has a long history in the Chinese inkstone development. It first appeared in the Eastern Han Dynasty and the Tang inkstones in the form of a clog, developing into the Song inkstones in the form of a clog and eventually into the Ming handheld inkstones. We can see that the development of Chinese inkstone has a long history. The major difference between the Ming handheld inkstones and cinnabar red handheld inkstone is that the former one is taller. There are also wide edge legs on the sides. The inscriptions on inkstones are also a reasonable trend of design. This inscription on the inkstone may be an imitation at the later times.
