Visit of Mr. Chu Tat Shing
Mr. Chu Tat Shing, a renowned local sculptor, received a video interview about his art journey with TVB by the sculpture of Home which is placed outside Ho Tim Hall and Lee Quo Wei Hall on 28 May. The sculpture of Home is one of the iconic works created by Mr. Chu. During the interview, he introduced the design origin and concept.
The bronze sculpture depicts the fluidity of the Chinese character “jia” meaning “home” written in cursive calligraphy. The character speaks of the College as a sheltered yet freely accessible place where teachers and students can together live, learn and grow. The two-metre-tall bronze sculpture was settled on the lawn of the College since 2011.
Biography of Mr. Chu Tat Shing
Born in Wuhan, China in 1942, Mr. Chu Tat Shing graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Hubei Institute of Fine Arts in 1965, and studied in postgraduate programme about sculpture art at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing in 1978. He became head of the sculpture art studio at the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts after completing his postgraduate studies. In 1984, he settled in Hong Kong and actively engaged in the local art community as a sculptor and teacher. He taught in the extra-mural programmes of both the University of Hong Kong and The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
In 2003, Mr. Chu served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors, the Artist Commune initiating many sculpture exhibitions and academic exchanges among Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau. In 2006, he created a five-metre-tall bronze statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen for the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Museum. In 2007, he was awarded a Medal of Honour by the HKSAR government. He is currently a vice-president of Standing Committee of China Artists Association, a director of the Beijing Artists Association, a director of the China Sculpture Institute, etc.
