College Fresh Graduate Receives Joseph Needham PhD Fellowship
Mr. Jack Kwok Yat Long, a fresh graduate of the College from the Department of Physics, received 2022 Joseph Needham PhD Fellowship Tenable at the University of Cambridge. As the second awardee of the fellowship, Jack will study for a doctorate in Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge. The fellowship will cover the full tuition and university fee for Jack’s four-year studies and he will reside in Darwin College.
The Joseph Needham Foundation for Science & Civilisation welcomes high-calibre students in STEM who have demonstrated exceptional scholarship, empathy and humility to join the Needham Scholarly community through its PhD Fellowship and Merit Scholarship programmes. Students from multiple universities in Hong Kong have been invited to apply. The first Joseph Needham PhD Fellowship was awarded in 1993 to Mr. Mei Jianjun of the University of Science and Technology Beijing tenable at the University of Cambridge. Upon successfully completing his doctorate in metallurgical archaeology four years later, he returned to his alma mater to take up an academic position. Since 2014, he has been the Director of the Needham Research Institute in Cambridge.
