Project/Company Name

Improve bowel and urinary function at home during COVID-19

Project Leader

Prof. Kaori FUTABA

Source of Funding/Programme

Starting Year
2021
Business Area
Healthcare, Well-being
Issue
Many patients are too embarrassed to seek medical help and are suffering alone at home. Some may seek to obtain more information online to self-manage their condition, but often the information available on line is inaccurate and misleading. With the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic still affecting all our lives in many ways, patients are often too frightened to go to hospital to seek medical help due to general public’s perception of high infection risk in hospitals.
Solution
Previous multidisciplinary health promotion program (KPF project no: KPF16INF11) offered face-to-face pelvic floor exercise by Physiotherapist, dietary advice by Dietician, lifestyle modification by nurse specialist and Tai Chi lessons. The program helped many patients suffering from faecal incontinence. We would now like to offer self-help management strategies via online multidisciplinary health promotion program with supplementary online virtual consultation if necessary. The program will be accessible online anytime of the day, allowing both patients, families and carers to actively manage their symptoms at home without the need to come into Hospital.
Impact
We hope this comprehensive multidisciplinary online program will empower patients to change their lifestyle and dietary habit to manage their symptoms. Virtual consultation and treatment may allow patients such as home bed-bound patients to get medical advice and to streamline resources in overwhelmed healthcare system.
Beneficiaries
Patients suffering from faecal or urinary incontinence or both, their carers and families
