Greening the Community Recently we took tree planting to the community by taking part in the Corporate Afforestation Scheme of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department. Prof. Liu, who officiated the opening of the scheme, says, 'We hope to raise consciousness of green practices not only on campus, but also in Reduce, Recycle and Renew Thanks to proactive energy conservation measures, electricity consumption at the University has gone down in spite of the rise in student and staff numbers. Similarly, we have managed to step up our recycling efforts at both university and college levels. 'The campus environment is something in which we all have a stake. We can save a lot by doing a little,' observes Prof. Liu. To lessen dependence on fossil fuel, the University has been tapping into renewable energy sources with encouraging results. We were the first university in Hong Kong to have solar- powered water heaters. These are now installed in 27 student hostels and the swimming pool. There is also a pilot programme on Eastern Campus to light street lamps using wind and solar energy. the community. Planting trees will help to cool our planet. The unique feature of our participation in the scheme is it is very hands-on. CUHK teachers, students, alumni and their family members are and will be involved. ' 5 Local Actions Global Tasks
