The Legend of Xiongnu – Prof. Kai Keung Mark’s Collection and the Opening Ceremony
S.H. Ho College holds an exhibition on “The Legend of Xiongnu – Prof. Kai Keung Mark’s Collection” which aims at introducing the rise and fall of the Xiongnu, their social structure, culture and customs, military and economy, etc. to the CUHK community and the public. The opening ceremony of the exhibition was held on 26 November, 2021. Prof. Wong Wing Shing, Master of S.H. Ho College gave a welcome speech at the event. Since Prof. Kai Keung Mark are not in Hong Kong, Prof. Wong also delivered an opening speech on his behalf. The five officiating guests of the event are Prof. Alan K.L. Chan, Provost, CUHK; Prof. Poon Wai-yin, Pro-Vice-Chancellor/Vice-President, CUHK; Prof. Ho Che Wah, Associate Director, The Institute of Chinese Studies, CUHK; Prof. Wong Wing Shing, Master, S.H. Ho College, CUHK; and Mr. Leung Chun Hei, President, Student Union Representative Council, S.H. Ho College, CUHK. They drew apart a curtain to signify the unveiling of the Xiongnu.
The legendary characteristic of the Xiongnu is highlighted in this exhibition. They established a huge empire in Mongolian grasslands during the Han dynasty and made their economic, military and cultural influences in history. Although we could not trace the whereabouts of the Xiongnu, their history could still be studied through the current information and the exhibits about them. More than 70 pieces of selected items related to the Xiongnu are displayed in this exhibition. They are divided into five zones, including “Origin”, “Race and Society”, “Commerce, Tools and Religion”, “Military” and “Whereabouts”.
The exhibition is a showcase of Prof. Kai Keung Mark’s collection. Prof. Mark is a connoisseur in Chinese cultural relics, with over 30 years’ experience in appreciating and collecting Chinese antiques, including ancient coins, bronze mirrors, jades, ceramics, inkstones, seals, paintings and calligraphy. He taught at the Department of Biology, CUHK for 30 years up to his retirement in 1995. In recent years, Prof. Mark has generously donated many of his collections to museums in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau, playing a significant role in preserving cultural relics for educational purposes.
