Highlights of the High Table Dinner

Master Wong introduces the state of the College at the High Table Dinner.

In the first semester of 2021-2022 academic year, the College held three High Table Dinners. Under the “new normal”, the College arranged the events in a different way. College students and members participated in the College Symposium either in person or via Zoom webinar. After that, those who attended in person would enjoy dinner at the College’s staff common room Connexion to continue with intellectual and cultural exchanges with College Master, fellow students and guests.

On 15 September, 2021, Prof. Wong Wing Shing, College Master, spoke to the audience about the state of the College, including the admission results, students’ outstanding performance, the arrangements of communal dinner and full residence, the improvement of College facilities, and the upcoming College activities. Prof. Wong described that external constraints may not be favourable to our planning but they also serve as stimulations for us to try new solutions.

Prof. Vincent C.T. Mok, Assistant Dean (Admissions), Faculty of Medicine, and Head of Division of Neurology, Department of Medicine and Therapeutics at CUHK and College member shared his researches on brain health on 20 October, 2021. Hong Kong has the longest life expectancy in the world, with female at 88 and male at 82 but the chance of developing dementia is also high over 80. To reduce the chance to develop dementia, Prof. Mok offered two pieces of advice. Firstly, we need to enhance resilience by leading a healthy life style, for example, exercising regularly, eating the right food, reading on educational level, exploring recreation like playing music and board games and dancing, resisting smoking and excess alcohol. Secondly, it is essential to maintain good relationships. Negative emotions will damage our brain health. A strong social network will equip us the capacity to effectively overcome loneliness and adversity.

The College’s High Table Dinner-cum-Scholarship Presentation Ceremony was held on 17 November, 2021. Dr. Tzu-leung Ho, Chairman of the Committee of Overseers, S.H. Ho College, Mrs. Stella Ho, and Prof. Wong Wing Shing, Master of S.H. Ho College presented 145 scholarship awards to the College’s distinguished students in recognition of their excellent performances. Before the ceremony commenced, Dr. Tzu-leung Ho encouraged College students to take up challenges no matter how hard they are. At the end of the ceremony, Miss Chan Lok Yung, the recipient of Dr. and Madam Tzu-leung Ho Scholarships for Distinguished Medical Students and representative of the scholarship recipients, proceeded to the lectern and expressed sincere gratitude to the College and donors for their unconditional support during their studies at CUHK.
