the bachelor degree (two part-time programmes). The faculty also offers physical education as well as general education courses in education for under graduate students of the University. A ll together over 160 courses are offered through these programmes. The faculty is now housed in the purpose-built Ho Tim Building on the Chung Chi campus. Over the years, the School o f Education has trained for Hong Kong some 6,000 senior secondary teachers, more than 200 educational researchers and specialists, and more than 50 teacher educators. The academic staff and research students o f the School have also made significant academic contributions through their scholarly studies, the findings o f which have been published in the School's bilingual Educa tion Journal, as well as other major international journals. With the establishment of this new faculty, it can be expected that staff members concerned w ill strive for even greater achievements in teaching and research and greater contributions to the Hong Kong community, to other major Chinese societies, and towards the blending o f Chinese and Western cultures. Dr. Leslie N.K. Lo, Dean o f Education Dr. Leslie Nai-Kwai Lo completed his second ary education in St. Paul's College in Hong Kong and furthered his studies in the United States. He graduated with a B.A. degree in public affairs from the University o f Oregon and obtained his Master degree in inter national affairs, his Ph.D. degree in education, and a Certificate o f East Asian Studies from Columbia University. In 1982, he re­ turned to Hong Kong and began his teaching career at The Chinese University. Over the past nine years, Dr. Lo has devoted much effort towards developing comparative education into a specialized area o f study and has focused his research on educational developments in contemporary Asia and China. For three years from 1987 to 1991, Dr. Lo was head o f the Graduate D ivision o f Education and contributed significantly to the reform o f the post­ graduate programmes of the School o f Education. In 1990, he was promoted to senior lecturer in educa­ tion. In August 1991 the School o f Education was reconstituted into a faculty , and Dr. Lo was elected as the first dean o f the Faculty of Education. Dr. Lo has published numerous articles and chapters in scholarly journals and noteworthy books. His translation of Peking Man, a famous work of the Chinese playwright Cao Yu, was published by the Columbia University Press. His two electronic publications on democracy and education — The Meaning o f Democracy and Democratic Education - represent an effort to illuminate pressing social issues for the local teaching profession. Dr. Lo has also recently been appointed by HE the Governor as a member o f the Board o f Education.
