Conference series International Seminar Series on Japanese Management The International Seminar Series on Japanese Management, jointly organized by the Faculty of Business Administration and New Asia College of The Chinese University, was held on 29th October, 1987 at Sir Cho Yiu Hall. Seven professors from the College of Business Administration of Asia University, Japan, were invited to present papers at the Seminar. The speakers included Professor Kan Toshio, who is also Dean of Business Graduate School, Professor Urago Yoshiro, Dean of the College of Business Administration, and Professors Honda Soichi, Kamimura Yuichi, Nakamura Genichi, Kasai Kenji, and Oe Hiroshi. Professor Mun Kin-chok, Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration, and Professor Lin Tzong-biau, Head of New Asia College of this University delivered welcoming speeches. Over the years ， New Asia College has maintained close connection with Asia University. During his visit to New Asia College the year before, Professor Kan suggested the establishment of academic links between the Faculty/College of Business Administration of the two universities and the cooperation in the empirical studies in management, which resulted in the holding of this Seminar. The extremely rapid development o f the economy of Japan after World War I I has, since the sixties, attracted many scholars to attempt efforts i n explaining why the country has reached such brilliant achievements in the operation of its market economy. Various schools of theory have therefore been set up, and Japanese management has become a major topic in the empirical studies in management, and in comparative study in particular. The professors from Asia University came all the way to attend the Seminar, expressing their views from the Japanese angle and sharing their achievements in research with their counterparts in this University. This was indeed a significant beginning, which would assuredly enable further academic exchange between the two universities. Early Childhood Nutritional Problems An international workshop on ‘Early Childhood Nutritional Problems i n the Far East', jointly hosted by the Department of Paediatrics and the Hong Kong Paediatric Society, took place at the Prince of Wales Hospital and the Hotel Riverside Plaza, Shatin on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th November, 1987. The workshop was generously sponsored by Wyeth International and Wyeth (Hong Kong) Ltd. The two-day workshop featured initially on the first day sessions four keynote speeches by renowned international specialists in the field to provide an update of current nutritional concepts. Dr. R.G. Whitehead, Director, MRC Dunn Nutrition Unit in Cambridge University, UK; Professor M. Gracey, Director, Princess Margaret Children's Medica l Research Foundation (Inc.), Perth, Australia; Dr. B.A. Wharton, Consultant Paediatrician, Sorrento Maternity Hospital in Birmingham; and Professor D.J.P. Barker, Director, MRC Environmental Epidemiology Unit, University of Southampton, UK. The second day sessions included a series of thirty-minute papers describing current nutritional problems in ten countries/regions in the Far East (Malaysia, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, China, Philippines, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Korea) given by invited speakers, all authorities in their field. These problems included malnutrition, growth failure, rickets, iron deficiency, allergy, obesity, infections etc. The workshop concluded wit h a very interesting and challenging discussion between audience and invited speakers on issues raised during the meeting. The workshop was opened b y Mrs. Elizabeth Wong, Director of Social Welfare. Dr. Sam P. Lau, President of the Hong Kong Paediatric Society and Professor D.P. Davies of the Department of Paediatrics also delivered welcoming addresses. Close to 300 participants from Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Macau, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and the United Kingdom attended the workshop, including significantly twenty-two delegates from centres in the People's Republic of China.
