Chi Lin Nunnery Ano t her project of Prof . Ho Puay Peng's involves the study of Buddhist monasteries, including the recently completed Chi Lin Nunnery in Kowloon, a meticulously designe d mod em replica of Tang architecture. The nunnery is also reminiscent of J apane s e a r ch i t e c t u r e wh i c h is be l i eved t o h a ve b e en he av i l y influenced by Tang culture. Prof. Ho's study enhances understanding of the solemnity of Tang architecture a nd the r e l a t i on s h ip b e t we en Chinese and Japanese architecture ; mo r e will t hu s a pp r e c i a te the cultural significance of the nunnery in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Heritage Mus eum The Hong Kong Heritage Museum in Sha Tin opened in December 2000. Prof. Ho had lent his expertise to several projects in the museum, including the reconstruction of an ancien t marketplace using the old market in Yuen Long as a b l uep r i n t, the bu i l d i ng of a model stage for Cantonese opera, and the chronological stud y of the history of Tsuen Wan, tracing its development from a few villages to a satellite town of the 70s and to what it is now. Two years from now, he will help with an exhibition on Hong Kong architecture to be staged by the museum. Prof. Ho is eager to let the public know more a bout Ho ng Kong ' s architecture —not only old buildings but also the cultural contents of a r ch i t e c t u re and th e concepts of space and living in the city.
