Chinese Flutes and German Opera at Communal Dinner
2015年3月13日
Musical performances have become a regular treat at College dinners, and this term alone has seen flutists, singers, and pianists take the stage. Most recently, first year students Timothy Tipoe and Joseph Zhao and professionally trained opera singer Xu Lufan have displayed their musical prowess at communal dinner, filling the dining hall with both new and familiar melodies.
Following his fall performance on the Western concert flute, year one student Timothy Tipoe switched things up at the 26 February dinner with two classic Chinese songs on the dízi (笛子): “Flower and Youth (花兒興少年)” and “Running Horse (賽馬)”. The next week on 5 March, special guest Xu Lufan, opera singer and Ph.D candidate in Historical Musicology, performed German Romantic songs including Schubert’s “An die Music” and “Die Forelle”, and Schumann’s “Der Nussbaum” and “Mondnacht”. Then on 10 March, Joseph Zhao, also a year one student, performed “The Wizard of Oz” and “The Music of the Tang Dynasty” on the Chinese bamboo flute (簫).
Music at Morningside has become a valuable part of the College culture, so be sure to join communal dinner for a chance to enjoy a beautiful performance.
