Prof. Edward Ng of the School of Architecture is an expert in environmental and sustainable design. Professor Ng said, ‘The purpose of my research is to search for the knowledge that would improve our living environment. This gives me the greatest satisfaction. It is why besides teaching and research, I would like to disseminate my research knowledge to benefit society. This generates feedback from society, pushing me to find solutions. This creates a complementary and mutually beneficial relationship between academia and society.’ After the SARS epidemic in 2003, Professor Ng was commissioned by the government to conduct the ‘Feasibility Study for Establishment of Air Ventilation Assessment Method in Hong Kong’. The project’s recommendations were adopted by the government, resulting in a new section on air ventilation in the Hong Kong Planning Standards and Guidelines. Later on, the government further commissioned Professor Ng to develop the Urban Climatic Map for Hong Kong. The University’s Third Mission Prof. Edward Ng
